Apparel is the most competitive category on Etsy, and t-shirt mockups are where most sellers lose before the buyer reads a single word. The design is often fine. The presentation says "generic POD listing" and the buyer scrolls on.

Model vs flat-lay vs ghost
Three formats, three jobs.
Model mockups — a person wearing the shirt. Highest converting for apparel, full stop. Buyers need to see fit, drape, and how the print sits on a body. If you use exactly one format, use this one.
Flat-lay mockups — shirt laid flat, shot from above, often with props. Cleaner, cheaper, and better for showing the design accurately at full size. Excellent as your second image; weak as your first.
Ghost mockups — shirt shaped as if worn, with no visible person. Neutral and professional, works when your buyer demographic is broad. Popular with brands that don't want a model's styling to narrow their audience.
The strong sequence for an Etsy apparel listing:
- Model mockup, front, well lit (thumbnail)
- Flat-lay showing the design clearly at full size
- Close-up of print detail and fabric texture
- Colour range grid — all available garment colours
- Second model, different pose or angle
- Size chart graphic
- Care instructions or shipping graphic
Getting artwork placement right
This is where amateur mockups reveal themselves.
Print area. Standard DTG front print is around 12×16 inches for adult sizes. Your design must sit inside that. A design that visually overflows the print area in the mockup misrepresents the product.
Vertical position. The top of a standard front print sits roughly 2–3 inches below the collar. Mockups where the design nearly touches the neckline look wrong to anyone who owns t-shirts, and buyers register it as "off" without knowing why.
Scale consistency. If you sell the same design across tees, hoodies and sweatshirts, keep the print physically the same size across all mockups. Buyers compare your photos side by side and inconsistent scale reads as sloppy. Heavyweight garments have their own rules — fleece needs thicker strokes and a shorter print area, covered in hoodie and sweatshirt mockups.

Garment colour: the problem nobody solves properly
A design that looks strong on white often falls apart on black, heather grey, and navy. Two failure modes:
- White or light elements vanish against light garments
- Dark outlines disappear against dark garments
Real fixes:
- Build colour variants of the artwork, not just the mockup. One version for light garments, one for dark. Most successful apparel shops do this.
- Add a subtle contrasting stroke to type-based designs so they survive both.
- Restrict your colour offering to what the design genuinely works on. Six colours that look great beat sixteen where five look broken.
Critical mockup detail: DTG on dark garments requires a white underbase, which slightly desaturates and softens colours. (Sublimation has no equivalent trick — it cannot print white at all, which is why it only suits pale polyester.) A mockup that shows fully saturated artwork on a black tee is over-promising. Reduce saturation ~5–10% on dark-garment mockups and your reviews will thank you.

Look for templates with a displacement map layer. That's what makes artwork follow fabric folds instead of sitting flat like a sticker. It's the single biggest quality difference between apparel mockups.
The volume problem
Here's the arithmetic that stops apparel sellers refreshing their listings.
You have 15 designs. Each sells in 6 garment colours. You want 4 mockup angles per colour.
15 × 6 × 4 = 360 mockups.
In Photoshop, at two minutes per export, that's twelve hours of mechanical work. Which is why most apparel shops publish two mockups per listing, in one colour, and wonder why conversion is flat.

Apparel mockup mistakes that cost sales
Using the supplier's default generator for everything. Free, fast, and identical to thousands of other listings.
One model demographic only. If your design targets nurses, a mockup on a 22-year-old model in a studio doesn't help the buyer picture themselves.
No print close-up. Apparel buyers are specifically worried about print quality — cracking, fading, thin ink coverage. A close-up removes that objection.
Ignoring the mobile crop. Etsy thumbnails are square and small. Open your listing on a phone: if the design is unreadable at thumbnail size, crop tighter, even if the full garment isn't visible.
Wrinkled or badly-lit self-shot blanks. If you shoot your own, iron the garment and use one large soft light source. A bad real photo converts worse than a good mockup.
Testing what works
Etsy Stats gives you views and favourites per listing. Change only the primary image, leave title, tags and price untouched, and check the view-to-favourite ratio after two weeks at similar traffic.
