The problem this solves
You save an image from a browser, it lands as a .webp, and then nothing downstream will take it. The file is fine; the ecosystem outside the browser simply has not caught up.

WebP's alpha channel maps straight onto PNG's, so cut-outs stay cut out rather than arriving on a white rectangle.
Lossless where it can be
A lossless WebP converts to PNG with no change at all. A lossy WebP keeps whatever it already had — the compression it was saved with cannot be reversed by any tool.

Questions
Why does everything save as WebP now?
Because it is roughly 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, and unlike JPG it supports transparency and animation. Browsers adopted it quickly; desktop software did not.
Does converting WebP to PNG improve quality?
No. If the WebP was saved lossily, that loss is permanent. Converting gives you a compatible, lossless container — not a better image.
Why is the PNG bigger than the WebP?
That is WebP working as intended. It is a more modern compressor, so a smaller file for the same picture is exactly the point.
Can I go the other way, PNG to WebP?
