Free Etsy Tag Generator

Describe your artwork and get 13 Etsy tags, ranked against the tags the most-favoured listings for that subject use.

This free Etsy tag generator writes the 13 tags for a print or wall art listing from a short description of the artwork. An AI model drafts them — a few naming exactly this piece, the rest the broad searches its niche shares — and PSDmate then ranks them against the tags carried by the most-favoured active Etsy listings for the same subject, which is how its own publisher chooses tags. Every tag stays within Etsy's 20-character limit, brand and character names are refused, and no account is needed: the first five tags are open, and an email address unlocks the full set.

How to use it

  1. Describe the artwork — A few words on what it shows and its style — "watercolour fern botanical print" is plenty. Leave out brand and character names; they are refused.
  2. Press Generate — The tags are drafted and ranked against the most-favoured Etsy listings for the same subject. It takes a few seconds.
  3. Unlock the full 13 — The first five are open. Enter an email address to see the rest — one signup unlocks every locked tool on the site.
  4. Copy them into your listing — Copy all 13 at once, paste them into Etsy's tag box, and remove any that do not describe your piece.

The problem this solves

Tags are the part of a listing sellers fill last and fastest, so they end up as chunks of the description ("perfect thoughtful addition"), single words, or the same 13 pasted across a whole shop. Each of those is a search the listing is not in, and Etsy gives no feedback that it happened.

What it does

Specific first, then broad

A few tags name exactly this artwork — its subject, place or style — and the rest cover the searches the whole niche shares: the kind of print, the room, the occasion, the recipient.

Ranked against what buyers favour

Etsy publishes no search volume, but its search API returns every active listing's tags and favourite count. Tags shared by the most-favoured listings of several different shops rank higher. If Etsy cannot be reached, you get the model's tags unranked rather than nothing.

Inside Etsy's limits

13 tags, each 20 characters or fewer, duplicates removed, and no tag cut off mid-word to fit.

No brand names

Ideas naming a protected brand, character or celebrity are refused with the reason, using the same list as the free trademark checker — a generator that writes tags for them is writing the takedown.

Where it lives in PSDmate

Free on this page: five tags open, the full 13 with an email address. Inside PSDmate, tags are written per design at publish time, and Retag rewrites a whole shop's tags in batches with an undo.

Questions

How many tags can an Etsy listing have?

13, each up to 20 characters. Use all of them: an empty tag slot is a search the listing is not entered in.

Should my tags repeat my title?

Overlap does no harm, but a tag slot is better spent on a phrase the title does not already cover — a room, an occasion, a recipient. The title says what the item is; the tags widen the searches it can appear in.

Will these tags make my listing rank?

No tool can promise that. Ranking also depends on photos, price, reviews and how buyers respond to the listing. These tags are phrases buyers search, ranked against what is working for similar listings — a strong starting set, not a guarantee.

Where does the "most-favoured listings" data come from?

Etsy's own search API: for your subject it reads the most relevant active listings, weights each by favourites per month of age, and counts which tags several different shops share. One shop's tags are that seller's opinion; several shops is a pattern.

Why was my description refused?

It named a brand, character, franchise or celebrity that rights holders enforce on Etsy. Describe the artwork without the name — the style, the subject, the colours — and try again.
