The problem this solves
PNG is lossless, which is another way of saying enormous. A 300 DPI mockup exports at forty megabytes, Etsy caps listing images well below that, and the file has to come down somehow. Doing it by re-exporting from a design tool means opening the design tool.

Transparency flattened onto white
JPG has no alpha channel. Transparent areas are composited onto white instead of turning black, which is what happens when a converter drops the channel without compositing.

The pixel dimensions do not change — only the compression. A 6000-pixel poster stays 6000 pixels.

Questions
What quality setting should I use?
Start at 90–92%. Below about 80% you begin to see haloing around hard edges and text, and photographs go blotchy in smooth gradients like skies.
Why did my transparent background go white?
JPG cannot store transparency. White is the sane default; if you need the transparency, stay on PNG or use WebP, which is smaller than PNG and keeps alpha.
Can I convert back to PNG later?
You can, but the quality lost in the JPG stage does not come back. Keep the PNG as your master and treat the JPG as a delivery copy.
Does this reduce the image dimensions?
No. Pixel dimensions are unchanged — only the compression differs. That matters for print, where pixels are what determine the size you can output at.
