Free Print Resolution Checker

Drop in your artwork and see the real DPI at every print size, before a customer finds out for you.

  3. Print checker

A print resolution checker tells you whether an image has enough pixels for the size you intend to print it at. DPI is not a property of a file — it is the relationship between the file's pixel dimensions and the physical size it is printed at, so the same image can be perfectly sharp at A4 and unusably soft at A0. This free checker reads your image's dimensions and reports the effective DPI for every common poster size, flagging anything below 150 DPI as risky and below 100 DPI as unprintable. It runs entirely in your browser: the file is never uploaded.

The problem this solves

You cannot see resolution on a phone screen. A file that looks perfect at fit-to-screen prints with furred edges and mushy text at A1, and the first you hear about it is a three-star review that stays on the listing forever.

What it does

Every size at once

Reports effective DPI across the full A-series and the common inch and centimetre poster sizes in one pass, so you find out that A2 is fine and A0 is marginal before you enable A0.

Orientation-agnostic

Takes the worse of the long-edge and short-edge figure, so a rotated file cannot report a flattering number it will not deliver.

The same thresholds the app enforces

Under 100 DPI is an error, under 150 a warning, 300 ideal — identical to the pre-publish check that runs inside PSDmate.

Nothing leaves your browser

Dimensions are read locally. No upload, no account, no file stored anywhere.

Where it lives in PSDmate

Free and open on this page. Inside PSDmate the same check runs automatically before you publish, against only the sizes you have actually enabled on the listing.

Questions

What DPI do I need for posters?

300 DPI is the comfortable default. For large formats viewed from across a room, 150 DPI is genuinely fine — viewing distance scales with print size. Below 100 DPI is visibly soft at any size.

Can I just change the DPI setting in Photoshop?

No. Changing the DPI field without resampling relabels the file and adds no pixels. What matters is pixel dimensions against physical size.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The check runs in your browser and reads only the image's width and height. The file never leaves your device.

My file is too low for the size I want. Can I upscale it?

You can, but upscaling invents pixels rather than recovering them, and the result prints soft. The better fix is to master the artwork at the largest size you sell and let smaller orders downsize from it.
