Etsy Canvas Prints Automation

Wrapped edges mean the artwork has to be built for the frame, not cropped to it. Artwork in, live listing out.

Automating an Etsy canvas shop means generating the wrap-aware print files and the room-scene mockups together, then publishing the listing. Canvas is the niche where automation has to understand geometry: a gallery wrap consumes 1.5 to 2 inches of artwork around every edge, so a file that works as a flat poster loses its composition the moment it is stretched.

Where the hours actually go

Automation is worth buying only where the manual version is genuinely expensive. For canvas prints on Etsy, this is what a single listing costs before it is live:

Building the wrap bleed

Every size needs its own bleed allowance around a safe area. Getting it wrong is not a visual nuance — it crops the subject onto the side of the frame.

Rendering depth variants

Canvas sells in different depths, and each reads differently in a room scene. Each depth is another export run.

Room scenes per size

Scale is the whole sell on canvas. A 16 × 20 and a 36 × 48 need different scenes to be honest about size.

Uploading

Size variations plus per-size print files, per listing.

What Etsy expects for canvas prints

Gallery wrapTypically 1.5–2 in consumed per edge — confirm against your supplier's template
Safe areaKeep subject matter clear of the wrap zone; centred subjects survive resizing, edge detail does not
Resolution300 DPI at final size including the bleed, not just the visible face
Common sizes12 × 16, 16 × 20, 18 × 24, 24 × 36 in, sold as size variations on one listing
Scale cuesRoom scenes with furniture — a canvas on a blank wall gives the buyer no size reference at all

The automated pipeline

  1. Artwork in. One master per design at full resolution.
  2. Wrap-aware files built. Each size exported with the correct bleed around a safe area rather than cropped from one master.
  3. Room scenes rendered. Every size and depth mapped into your canvas PSD templates in a single job.
  4. Copy and publish. Listing copy generated from the rendered image, then published with size variations attached.

Why this is a batch problem

Designs × sizes × depths × room scenes. The size axis is not optional here, because the print file genuinely differs per size rather than being one file scaled.

What still needs you

Worth saying plainly, because a tool that claims to automate everything is describing a product that does not exist:

  • Confirming your supplier's exact wrap depth. Suppliers differ and a rounded number crops prints.
  • Deciding which sizes to offer, which is a margin and shipping-cost decision.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I use the same file for canvas and poster?

Because a gallery wrap folds 1.5 to 2 inches of the image around the frame edge. A poster file stretched onto canvas loses that margin from the visible face, which usually means clipped subject matter.

Does canvas need a different mockup from a framed print?

Yes. Canvas has no frame and no glass, so the edge and the absence of reflection are what tell the buyer what they are getting. A framed-poster scene sells the wrong product.
