A mug mockup generator wraps your flat design around a photographed ceramic mug, matching the curve, the handle position and the way gloss catches the print. PSDmate renders these from your own PSD templates, so the wrap comes from the template's Smart Object transform rather than an approximation — and one job can produce every mug colour, both sides and every lifestyle scene you sell.
How it works
- Upload your PSD templates. PSDmate finds the Smart Object placeholder in each file — no layer renaming, no setup.
- Add your artwork. One design or a folder of them.
- Render the batch. Every design against every template, at the PSD’s native canvas size, returned as a ZIP.
- Publish to Etsy. AI writes the title, description and 13 tags from the rendered image, then posts the draft listing to your shop.
PSDmate does not supply mugtemplates. It renders the ones you own — bought from Creative Market, Envato or Etsy, or built from your own photography. That is the trade: your scenes stay yours instead of appearing in every other shop’s listings.
Mug print specifications
| Common 11 oz print file | 2475 × 1155 px — the widely used full-wrap spec |
| Typical print area | About 8.5 × 3.35 in wrap on an 11 oz mug |
| Handle clearance | Keep key detail 1 in clear of the handle on each side |
| File format | PNG at 300 DPI; PSD for the template |
| Etsy listing image | 2000 px on the shortest side or larger |
These are the common figures across major print-on-demand suppliers, not a guarantee. Your supplier’s own spec sheet always wins — see the DPI and resolution guide for how to check a file before listing it.
What makes a mug mockup convert
The wrap is not a rectangle
A design pasted flat onto a cylinder is the single most obvious mockup mistake. The template's Smart Object must carry the cylindrical warp already.
Handle side matters
Right-handle and left-handle shots are different listings images, and text positioned for one is wrong on the other.
Gloss and reflection
Ceramic reflects. A highlight layer above the artwork is what separates a real mug from a flat print on a mug-shaped photo.
Both sides printed
Most POD mugs print both sides. Render both, or buyers ask before ordering — which costs you the sale.
Choosing a mug PSD template
- Check the Smart Object is pre-warped to the cylinder; a flat rectangular placeholder cannot be fixed later.
- Look for templates with a separate gloss/highlight layer above the placeholder.
- Get a matched pair — left-handle and right-handle — from the same shoot.
- Lifestyle scenes (desk, kitchen, hands) convert better than white-background shots as secondary images.
Why bulk rendering matters here
Mug colour × handle side × both print faces × lifestyle scene. A single mug design is easily 12–20 images.
Rendering that by hand is the same six Photoshop steps repeated until the drop is live. PSDmate runs the whole grid as one job, which is the difference between listing a design the day you finish it and listing it next weekend.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a mug design be?
For a standard 11 oz full-wrap mug, 2475 × 1155 px at 300 DPI is the widely used print file size. Confirm against your supplier — 15 oz and colour-changing mugs use different dimensions.
How do I make a mug mockup that looks curved?
The curve has to come from the template. A PSD mug template stores the cylindrical warp inside its Smart Object, so any artwork placed into it bends correctly. Tools that overlay a flat image onto a mug photo cannot reproduce it.
Do I need to show both sides of the mug?
If both sides print, yes. Buyers assume a single-image listing shows the whole product, and a missing reverse side is one of the most common pre-purchase questions on POD mug listings.
