Print-on-Demand Profit Margins on Etsy: What You Actually Keep

Most POD sellers underestimate fees and overprice out of fear. A realistic breakdown of Etsy fees, printer costs, and the pricing formula that protects your margin.

New POD sellers consistently make the same mistake: they price based on what feels comfortable, not what the numbers require. Then they get surprised when a month of solid sales produces almost nothing after fees. This guide gives you the actual fee breakdown and a pricing formula you can use immediately.

Every fee that cuts into your Etsy POD revenue

Etsy charges sellers across multiple touchpoints. Most sellers know about the transaction fee but miss two or three of the others. This section assumes you already have a shop running — if you are still deciding whether to start, the complete Etsy POD playbook covers suppliers, products and setup first.

Listing fee

£0.20 per listing (approximately $0.20 USD), charged when you publish. Listings auto-renew every 4 months or when they sell. For a shop with 200 active listings, that's £40 every 4 months in listing fees alone — before a single sale.

Transaction fee

6.5% of the total sale price, including shipping if you charge for it. This is the largest single fee for most sellers. On a £20 sale: £1.30.

Payment processing fee

4% + £0.20 (UK). Varies by country — US sellers pay 3% + $0.25. On a £20 sale: £1.00.

Offsite Ads fee

If your shop made over £10,000 in the past 12 months, Etsy automatically enrols you in Offsite Ads and charges 12% on sales driven by those ads. Shops below that threshold can opt out. If you're below the threshold and opted in voluntarily, you pay 15%. This fee is often the one that shocks sellers when they first see it on a statement.

Etsy Ads (optional)

Pay-per-click advertising within Etsy search. Budget-controlled, but easily burns margin if you're advertising unconverted listings. Not a fixed cost — keep it optional until your listings convert organically above 1%.

The full fee calculation on a real sale

Example: A customer buys an A3 unframed poster for £18.00 with £2.50 shipping. Total charged to buyer: £20.50.

  • Transaction fee (6.5% of £20.50): −£1.33
  • Payment processing (4% + £0.20 of £20.50): −£1.02
  • Listing fee (amortised, ≈ £0.05 per sale at volume): −£0.05
  • Etsy fees total: ~£2.40 (every charge broken down in Etsy fees explained)

You receive approximately £18.10 from Etsy. Then subtract your printer cost.

Printer costs: what to budget

POD printer pricing varies significantly. Representative costs in 2026 for A3 unframed giclée poster via UK-based fulfilment:

  • Base print cost: £3.50–£5.00
  • Packaging (tube or flat pack): £0.50–£1.20
  • Shipping to UK customer: £2.50–£4.00 (often passed to buyer)

Continuing the example above — print cost £4.20, packaging £0.80 (shipping covered by buyer):

  • Revenue from Etsy after fees: £18.10
  • Printer cost: −£5.00 (print + packaging)
  • Net profit: £13.10 — a 64% margin on revenue

That's a healthy margin. But many sellers price A3 posters at £9–£12 out of fear of being "too expensive" — which produces £2–£5 net profit after fees, or sometimes a loss.

The pricing formula

Work backwards from your target margin, not forward from gut feeling:

  1. Establish your hard floor: Print cost + packaging + Etsy fees (≈10.5% of sale price as a rule of thumb) + desired minimum profit
  2. Check market price: What are the top 10 bestselling listings in your exact niche charging? Price at or slightly above the median — not the bottom
  3. Test, don't guess: Raise prices 15–20% on underperforming listings. Etsy buyers associate higher price with higher quality. Conversion often stays flat or improves

Simplified formula: Minimum price = (Printer cost + packaging) ÷ (1 − 0.105) + target profit

At £5.00 production cost, targeting £8.00 net profit: £5.00 ÷ 0.895 + £8.00 = £13.59 minimum. Price at £14–£16 and you're protected.

What margins actually look like at scale

A shop with 200 active listings generating 150 sales/month at an average £16 sale price:

  • Gross revenue: £2,400/month
  • Etsy fees (~10.5%): −£252
  • Production costs (~30% of sale price): −£720
  • Listing renewals (150 sales × £0.20): −£30
  • Net profit: ~£1,398/month (~58% margin)

That's before advertising spend. At 0% Offsite Ads and no paid Etsy Ads, a 55–65% net margin is achievable for most POD wall art shops. Sellers running Offsite Ads on high-volume shops see margins drop to 45–55%.

Where margins leak

  • Underpricing to compete on price. Buyers in the £8–£12 poster bracket are not the same buyers as the £18–£25 bracket. You don't need to win a price war. Set the floor properly with the Etsy pricing formula.
  • Not tracking production cost increases. Printer costs creep up. A template you set up 18 months ago may now be priced below your floor without you realising.
  • Offsite Ads on low-margin listings. A listing priced too cheaply that gets Offsite Ads traffic will lose money on every referred sale. Either raise the price or opt out of Offsite Ads until you're past the £10k threshold.
  • Not charging enough for shipping. Etsy's transaction fee applies to the shipping amount too. If your shipping charge doesn't fully cover packaging + carrier cost + the fee on the shipping itself, you're subsidising fulfilment from your margin.

Increasing margin without raising prices

Three levers that improve margin without touching your price points:

  • Increase listing volume without increasing time. More listings means more chances to be found — and your fixed overhead (shop subscription, tooling) spreads across more revenue. Automated mockup tools (see how PSDmate works, pricing) let you list 5–10× more designs per hour, which increases top-line revenue without proportionally increasing time cost.
  • Negotiate or switch printers. At volume (500+ orders/month), most fulfilment providers offer tiered pricing. Shop PrintShrimp, Gelato, and Printful periodically — their pricing changes and the gap between them widens at scale. Current comparison: Printful vs Printify.
  • Move repeat buyers off-platform. Etsy's 9–11% cut applies to every repeat order forever. Above roughly £3,000/month the fee saving on a branded store becomes real money — the maths is in Etsy vs Shopify for print-on-demand.
  • Convert better on existing traffic. A 1% improvement in conversion rate on 5,000 monthly visits is 50 additional sales at zero extra cost. Better mockups, videos, and descriptions pay for themselves faster than advertising.

Pricing sanity check:

  • Production cost known and up-to-date?
  • Price set above (production ÷ 0.895) + target profit?
  • Shipping charge covers packaging + carrier + Etsy's 6.5% on shipping?
  • Offsite Ads status checked — opted out if below £10k threshold?
  • Market median checked in last 3 months?

Frequently asked questions

What profit margin should print-on-demand sellers aim for?

High enough to absorb a refund and an Offsite Ads commission on the same order without going negative. Thin margins do not simply earn less — they convert a single return into a loss spread across several sales, which is how shops end up busy and unprofitable.

How much does Etsy take from a print-on-demand sale?

A stack of fees rather than one: listing, transaction, payment processing, potentially Offsite Ads and currency conversion. Combined they commonly reach the high teens as a percentage of order value, and considerably more on an Offsite Ads sale.

Why am I making sales but no profit?

Usually one of three things: the price was set from competitors rather than from landed cost, Offsite Ads commission was not modelled, or returns and reprints are not being counted at all. The profit calculator will show which.

How do I increase margin without raising prices?

Raise average order value through bundles and variations, reduce fulfilment cost by comparing suppliers per product, and cut the reprint rate by validating print files before publishing. All three move margin without touching the price a buyer sees.

Are digital downloads higher margin?

Substantially, because there is no print cost, no postage and no returns. The trade-off is heavier competition and lower prices, so revenue per listing tends to be lower even though margin per sale is far higher.
