City map prints sell on Etsy mainly as gifts tied to a place: a new home, a wedding venue, a university town, a city someone is leaving. To sell them well, decide early whether you sell custom maps or a ready-made catalogue, lead every title with the place and "map print", offer a small set of colourways and sizes per city, credit the map data you use, and show the street detail up close in your mockups.
Custom or ready-made?
There are two quite different businesses under "city map prints".
Ready-made maps are a catalogue: one design per city or neighbourhood, in a few colourways and sizes, listed once and sold many times. The work is upfront. Once a map is rendered and listed, each sale needs nothing from you if you use print-on-demand. This model rewards volume and good search coverage, and it scales to hundreds of listings.
Custom maps are made to order: the buyer gives a location (their home, a wedding venue, the place they met), and you produce a map centred there, often with names, a date or coordinates. They sell at higher prices and face less direct competition, because each one is unique. But every order needs a proof, a buyer reply and sometimes a revision, so your time per sale stays high. The personalised products guide covers how to collect details and handle proofs without errors.
Many shops do both: a ready-made catalogue that brings in search traffic, and one or two custom listings for buyers who want their exact location. If you add text like place names and coordinates, the coordinate posters guide covers the typography and formats.
Which places to map
Big capitals are the most searched and the most crowded. A shop with one more London map competes with thousands. Places that tend to work better for a growing shop:
- Second cities and university towns, where the gift motive (graduation, leaving home) is strong.
- Neighbourhoods and districts within big cities, which people identify with more than the whole city.
- Coastal towns, islands and lakes, where the water outline does a lot of the design work.
- Places in a series, such as every football ground city in a league or every Scottish city, so one buyer can see a set.
Check demand before you map: type the place plus "map print" into Etsy's search bar and see whether it autocompletes, and how many results come back.
Titles that lead with the place
The buyer is searching for a place, so the place goes first, followed by the product type. Style, size and occasion come after.
| Weak | Stronger |
|---|---|
| Minimalist Street Art Poster Modern City Map Print Wall Decor | Bristol Map Print, Minimalist Street Map Poster, A3 A2 A1 |
| My Town Map, Personalised Gift | Personalised Street Map Print, Custom Home Location Poster, Housewarming Gift |
| Edinburgh | Edinburgh City Map Print, Black and White Street Map, Moving Away Gift |
Do not open every title in the shop with "City Map Print". Two hundred listings with the same opening compete for the same search, and the place name is what makes each one the best answer to its own search. How to write Etsy titles covers the formula.
A 13-tag set for a city map
Here is a set for a minimalist London street map. Every tag is 20 characters or fewer.
london map print · london street map · city map poster · minimalist map art · london wall art · uk city print · black white map · housewarming gift · moving away gift · new home present · travel lover gift · office wall decor · hometown print
The first five name the place and product. The rest cover style, gift occasions and rooms, which are searches the whole niche shares. Swap the place tags for each city and keep the structure. Etsy tags for wall art has more sets and the rules behind them.
Colourways: a few, done well
Map prints suit colourways because the design is mostly lines on a background. Four or five tends to be enough:
- Black on white and white on black, which most buyers look for first.
- One warm neutral, such as cream with charcoal lines.
- One or two colours that match current interiors, such as sage or navy.
Keep the colour set the same across every city. It makes the shop look like a collection, lets a buyer pair two cities in one colour for a gallery wall, and means you only design each colourway once.
Set colour up as a variation on one listing per city rather than separate listings, and include a photo of each colour so buyers can see what they are choosing.
Sizes: render, do not crop
Sell both the A-sizes UK and European buyers search for (A4, A3, A2) and the inch sizes US buyers search for (such as 8x10, 11x14, 16x20 and 18x24) if you sell abroad. Sell your poster in every print size explains the ratios.
Maps have a problem other artwork does not: A-sizes and inch sizes have different aspect ratios, so a single map cropped to fit both loses part of the city at the edges, or stretches. Render each ratio from the data with the same centre and scale instead. It takes longer the first time but means the river, the centre and the landmark streets are always in frame.
Also check line weights at the smallest size you sell. Fine streets that look delicate on an A2 can disappear or blur on an A4 print.
Map data and licensing
Where your map comes from matters as much as how it looks. In general terms:
- OpenStreetMap data is openly licensed and can be used commercially, but the licence requires attribution, usually a credit to "OpenStreetMap contributors" on or with the print, and has conditions about sharing changes to the database itself. Read the copyright and attribution pages on the OpenStreetMap website before selling, and put the credit somewhere sensible, such as a small line in a corner of the print and in your listing description.
- Other open data, such as some national mapping agencies' open datasets, comes with its own attribution wording. Use the exact wording the publisher asks for.
- Map tiles and styles from online map services are often covered by separate terms from the underlying data, and some do not allow print use or require a paid licence. Using the data is not the same as using someone's rendered map.
- Screenshots of Google Maps or similar services are not yours to sell.
- Recognisable designs like transit maps or official logos can be protected in their own right. A street map of London is fine; a print that copies a famous underground map's look may not be. Copyright and trademark for POD sellers covers the wider rules.
This is general information, not legal advice. If map prints are your main line, read the licences in full.
Mockups that show the detail
A city map at thumbnail size is a grey rectangle. Mockups have to do two jobs: show it on a wall, and show the streets.
A photo set that works for most map listings:
- The map in a frame on a wall, as the first photo, with a clean background so the outline reads in search results.
- A close-up crop of the centre, so buyers can see street names or the line detail.
- Every colourway side by side, one image.
- A size guide showing the print against furniture or a person.
- A pair or gallery wall with another city, which sells the idea of a set.
- A styled room shot for the gift buyer.
If you have a hundred cities in five colourways, that is hundreds of mockups. This is where batching pays off: set up your frames once as Photoshop templates and render every map through them. PSDmate does this in bulk from your own PSD frames or its built-in library.
A checklist before you list a city
- The place is something buyers search for, checked in Etsy's search bar.
- The title opens with the place and "map print".
- All 13 tags are used, each 20 characters or fewer.
- The colour set matches the rest of your shop.
- Each size ratio was rendered, not cropped.
- The data credit is on the print and in the description.
- The photos include a close-up of the street detail.
Frequently asked questions
Do city map prints sell on Etsy?
Yes, they are an established wall art niche, bought mostly as gifts for a move, a wedding, a graduation or someone leaving home. That also means competition is high for big-city searches, so most shops do better with specific places, a distinctive style, or personalisation than with one more generic London map.
Can I use OpenStreetMap data for map prints I sell?
OpenStreetMap data is published under an open licence that allows commercial use, as long as you give attribution and follow the licence terms. In practice that means crediting OpenStreetMap contributors on or with the print. Read the licence and attribution guidance on the OpenStreetMap website before selling, and remember that a map style or tile service you use may have its own separate terms.
Can I sell prints made from Google Maps screenshots?
No. Google's terms do not allow you to sell printed copies of its map imagery, and a screenshot is still Google's map. Build your maps from openly licensed data that you style and render yourself.
Should each colourway of a city map be a separate listing?
Usually not. Separate listings for the same city in five colours compete with each other for the same searches. One listing per city with colour as a variation, and a photo of each colourway, keeps your shop's chance in that search on one listing. Keep separate listings for styles that look clearly different and attract different buyers.
What are good Etsy tags for a city map print?
A few tags that name the place and product, such as 'london map print' or 'london street map', a style tag such as 'minimalist map art', and the rest on gift occasions and rooms such as 'housewarming gift' or 'moving away gift'. Every tag must be 20 characters or fewer, and all 13 slots should be used.
