Printful owns and operates its fulfilment centres. One company, one quality standard, one set of shipping times. Pricing is what it is because you're paying for that control.
Printify is a marketplace of independent print providers. You choose the provider per product — Monster Digital, SwiftPOD, Dimona, Print Geek, and dozens more. Prices vary widely between them, and so does quality.
That single distinction explains everything downstream. Printful is predictable. Printify is cheaper if you do the work of selecting providers, and inconsistent if you don't.

Subscription. Printify Premium is ~$29/month for roughly 20% off base costs. Worth it above about 30 orders a month; a straight loss below that. Printful's Growth plan works similarly.
Once you add shipping and a realistic 2–4% reprint rate, Printify's advantage on a typical tee shrinks from ~28% to roughly 12–18%. Still real. Not the number the comparison tables imply.
Quality, honestly
Printful's print quality is more consistent, not necessarily better at its best. A good Printify provider (SwiftPOD and Monster Digital both get consistent seller praise) matches Printful on DTG output.
The risk with Printify isn't bad quality — it's variable quality. Provider A prints your design perfectly for six months, then their queue backs up in Q4 and your customers get a lighter print and a nine-day delay. Printful's Q4 also slows, but you're told about it centrally.

Yes, and many established shops do — Printful for apparel and anything customers complain about, Printify for high-volume, low-risk items like mugs and totes. Both integrate with Etsy directly, and both let you keep one listing per product.
The overhead is real, though: two dashboards, two sets of mockup dimensions, two support processes. Don't split until one of them is actively costing you money.
The part neither provider fixes
