Etsy Keyword Research: How to Find Tags That Actually Get You Found

A repeatable process for Etsy keyword research — how Etsy matches searches to listings, where to find real long-tail terms for free, and how to build 13 tags that don't waste slots.

Etsy keyword research gets treated as a tool problem — buy eRank, buy Marmalead, done. It's a process problem. The tools tell you volume; they don't tell you which of the 40,000 competing listings you can realistically outrank.

This is the process, with the free sources first.

How Etsy matches searches to listings

Two stages, and they're often confused.

Stage 1: Query matching. Etsy finds listings whose title, tags, categories and attributes match the buyer's search. This is a relevance filter. If your phrase isn't present, you're not in the pool at all.

Stage 2: Ranking. Among matching listings, Etsy orders by listing quality score (conversion rate), recency, customer and market experience, shipping price, and translation quality.

The implication matters: keywords get you into the running; conversion decides where you place. A perfectly-tagged listing with a weak thumbnail sinks. That's why keyword work and mockup work are the same project.

Exact-phrase matching is the whole game

Etsy's search weights exact phrase matches in tags far more heavily than individual words. A tag of "boho wall art" matches the search "boho wall art" strongly. It does not compete meaningfully for "boho art print".

Consequences:

  • Never split a phrase across tags. "boho" + "wall art" as separate tags is much weaker than "boho wall art" as one tag.
  • Use multi-word tags. Single-word tags like "art" are unwinnable and waste a slot.
  • Don't repeat words across tags more than twice. "wall art print", "wall art decor", "wall art gift" — you've spent three slots on near-identical coverage.

You get 13 tags, 20 characters each — see the Etsy character limits reference for how that interacts with every other field. Treat each tag as a separate bet on a specific search phrase.

Free research sources, in order of usefulness

1. Etsy's own search bar

Start typing your product term and read the autocomplete suggestions. These are real searches, ranked by volume, straight from Etsy. No tool gives you better raw signal for free.

Do it systematically: type your core term, then the term plus each letter of the alphabet ("wall art a", "wall art b"). Twenty minutes gets you a hundred real phrases.

2. Etsy search filters and category pages

After searching, look at the suggested refinements Etsy displays above results. Those are the attribute combinations buyers actually filter by, which tells you which attributes to fill in on your listings.

3. Competitor listings that outrank you

Open the top five listings for your target search. Read their titles closely — the first 40 characters carry the most weight, and successful sellers have usually tested them. You're not copying; you're reading what the market rewards.

4. Etsy Search Analytics (your own Stats)

In Shop Manager → Marketing → Search Analytics, Etsy shows the actual queries that led to impressions and clicks on your listings, with position data. This is the most underused free tool on the platform.

Look for phrases where you get impressions but few clicks — those are searches you rank for but lose on presentation. And phrases where you get clicks at low volume: those are terms worth promoting into your title.

5. Google autocomplete and Pinterest

Etsy buyers arrive from both. Pinterest search suggestions in particular skew toward visual, aspirational phrasing that matches Etsy buying intent well.

6. Paid tools (eRank, Marmalead, Alura)

Useful for volume estimates and competition counts, roughly $6–$30/month. Treat their volume figures as directional, not exact — they're modelled, not measured. Worth it once you have 30+ listings and need to prioritise. Which one suits which job, with current prices: best Etsy SEO tools.

The competition filter that matters

Search volume is only half the equation. Search your target phrase on Etsy and look at the result count, then look at what's ranking:

  • Under 5,000 results — realistically winnable for a new shop
  • 5,000–20,000 — winnable with strong conversion and some sales history
  • Over 50,000 — you will not rank without significant existing shop authority

But also check quality: if the top results for a 30,000-result phrase all have weak, obviously-generic mockups, that phrase is more winnable than the count suggests. Conversely, a 3,000-result phrase where the top ten are all established shops with 5,000+ sales is harder than it looks.

Building the 13 tags

A structure that works, using a boho botanical wall art print as the example:

Tag typeCountExamples
Primary long-tail3"boho botanical print", "neutral wall art", "botanical wall decor"
Style descriptors3"mid century modern", "scandi wall art", "minimalist print"
Room / placement2"living room decor", "bedroom wall art"
Gift and occasion2"housewarming gift", "gift for her"
Product specifics2"digital download", "printable art"
Niche / audience1"plant lover gift"

Rules that make it work:

  • Every tag is a phrase someone would plausibly type
  • No tag duplicates another tag's full meaning
  • Plurals: Etsy handles most stemming, so don't spend a slot on both "print" and "prints"
  • Match your title's key phrase in at least one tag — the reinforcement helps
  • Fill in every attribute Etsy offers for your category. Attributes are ranking signals and most sellers leave them blank.

One caution before you commit a phrase to 40 listings: check it isn't a registered trademark in your product's class. Short, generic-sounding phrases get registered in clothing and paper goods constantly, and a takedown costs the listing plus a strike. Two-minute check, described in Etsy copyright and trademark for POD.

Titles: front-load the phrase that matters

Etsy weights the beginning of a title most heavily, and buyers only see the first 40–50 characters in search results.

Weak: Beautiful Handmade Unique Print For Your Home — Boho Botanical Wall Art

Strong: Boho Botanical Wall Art Print, Neutral Living Room Decor, Digital Download

Lead with the phrase you most want to rank for. Use commas to separate distinct phrases rather than stuffing keywords into one run-on sentence. Full title strategy in the Etsy SEO guide.

The re-test loop

Keywords are not set-and-forget. Every 60 days:

  1. Open Search Analytics and note your top 10 impression-generating queries
  2. Any query with high impressions and low clicks → the listing ranks but doesn't convert. Fix the thumbnail.
  3. Any query with clicks that isn't in your title → promote it into the title
  4. Any tag generating nothing after 60 days → replace it
  5. Re-check your bestseller's competitors — the phrases that worked last quarter may now be saturated

Point 2 is where most shops lose. Ranking for a search you don't win the click on is worth nothing, and no amount of further keyword work fixes it. That's a presentation problem, solved by testing stronger primary images — which is much easier when you can render a dozen variants in one pass instead of one an hour.

60-minute keyword research process:

  1. Twenty minutes in Etsy's autocomplete — collect 50+ real phrases
  2. Search each candidate; discard anything over ~50,000 results unless top listings look weak
  3. Sort survivors into the six tag categories; pick 13 distinct phrases
  4. Front-load your strongest phrase into the first 40 characters of the title
  5. Fill in every available attribute
  6. Diarise a 60-day review using Search Analytics, and fix low-CTR rankings with better images

Frequently asked questions

How do I find keywords for my Etsy listing?

Start with Etsy own search suggestions, which are drawn from real buyer queries rather than estimated volume. Then read the tags on listings that already rank for terms you want. Then check Etsy Search Analytics for the queries you already appear for. Paid tools add convenience, not information you cannot get free.

Do Etsy tags need to be exact phrases?

Largely, yes, and this is the most misunderstood part of Etsy SEO. Etsy matches multi-word tags against multi-word queries, so a tag reading personalised dog portrait can match that phrase in a way that three separate single-word tags will not. Use multi-word phrases, not keyword fragments.

Should tags repeat words that are already in the title?

Repeating a whole phrase across both is normal and useful, because Etsy considers title and tag relevance together. What wastes slots is using thirteen variations of the same phrase — that competes with itself rather than covering more query space.

How long can an Etsy tag be?

Twenty characters, which is the constraint that shapes everything else. It rules out long descriptive phrases and forces you to choose which two or three words in a query matter most. You get thirteen tags, so treat each one as a separate query you are entering.

Are free Etsy keyword tools good enough?

Yes, for almost everyone. Etsy own search bar, its Search Analytics, and reading competitors tags will get you most of the way. Paid tools mainly save time and offer estimated volume figures that should be treated as directional rather than accurate.
