Most sellers never consider making their own mockup templates. You buy a pack, you use it, and so does everybody else who bought that pack — which is why scrolling an Etsy category often feels like looking at the same six rooms over and over.
Building your own takes an afternoon the first time and about forty minutes after that. What you get back is a scene nobody else on the platform is using, in a style you control, that keeps working for every design you ever make.
Start with the photograph, not Photoshop
Everything downstream is decided in the shot. A brilliant compositing job cannot rescue a badly lit photo, and a well-lit photo needs barely any compositing.
Shoot the product blank. A plain white or plain black t-shirt, an unprinted mug, an empty frame. You need the surface with nothing on it, because the artwork is going to be laid into that space later.
Light it evenly and diffusely. A window with a net curtain on an overcast day beats any lamp you own. What you are avoiding is a hard specular highlight sitting in the middle of the print area — you can add a highlight back in later, but you cannot remove one that has blown the surface to pure white.
Keep the print area as flat-on as you can. A shirt photographed at a steep angle can still be mocked up, but every degree of perspective is a degree you have to match by hand, and the errors are visible. Straight-on with slight, natural fabric movement is the sweet spot.
Use a tripod and shoot more frames than you think you need. Front, angled, folded, held, in-context. One session gives you a whole family of templates that look like a coherent set — which is worth more on a listing than five unrelated scenes.
Shoot at full resolution and keep the RAW. Etsy wants 2000 px on the shortest side; see Etsy image size requirements for what the listing itself needs. Your master should be considerably larger than that, so you can crop later without regret.
Build the smart object
This is the mechanism the whole template rests on. If you have not worked with smart objects before, the smart objects guide covers what they are and why they behave the way they do; here is the build sequence.
- Open your product photo and add a new layer above it.
- Fill the print area with a solid colour — mid grey is easiest to see against most products. Use the Pen tool or a selection to match the shape of the printable region exactly, including any curvature at the edges.
- Right-click the layer → Convert to Smart Object.
- Free Transform → Distort (or Warp) until the grey shape sits in correct perspective on the product. This is the step that takes the longest and matters the most. If the product has a straight edge — a frame, a case, a phone — align to that edge.
- Rename the layer. More on this below; it is not cosmetic.
- Double-click the smart object thumbnail. A separate document opens. Whatever you paste in here appears on the product, in perspective, at the size and shape you defined. Save and close, and the parent updates.
At this point you have a working mockup. It will also look distinctly like a rectangle pasted onto a photo, which is what the next two sections fix.
The displacement map is what sells it
On fabric, the difference between an amateur mockup and a professional one is almost entirely this step.
A displacement map is a greyscale version of the product photo that Photoshop uses as a height field: light areas push pixels one way, dark areas the other. Applied to your artwork, it makes the design ride over folds and creases the way real ink on real cloth does.
- Duplicate the background product photo into a new document.
- Image → Mode → Grayscale.
- Filter → Blur → Gaussian Blur, around 2–4 px. Some blur is essential — an unblurred map displaces on noise and gives you a grainy, jittery result.
- Save as a
.psdsomewhere you will find again. Name it after the template. - Back in the mockup, open the smart object, and on the artwork inside it apply Filter → Distort → Displace. Start at 5 horizontal, 5 vertical, Stretch To Fit, Repeat Edge Pixels. Choose the map file you just saved.
Five is a starting point, not a rule. Heavy knitwear wants more, a taut canvas wants almost none. Turn it up until it looks wrong, then come back until it looks right.
Skip this step entirely for smooth surfaces — glass, a phone case, a glossy mug. There is nothing to displace over, and the filter will only introduce noise.
Blend modes, shadow and highlight
Three small moves take the artwork from "on top of the photo" to "part of the photo".
- Set the artwork layer's blend mode to Multiply on light-coloured products. Multiply lets the fabric texture and shading underneath show through the ink, which is exactly what happens in reality. On dark products Multiply turns the design black — use Screen or Normal at reduced opacity instead, and expect to build a separate dark-garment template.
- Add a Curves or Levels adjustment clipped to the artwork, pulled down slightly in the areas where the product photo is in shadow. Real ink does not stay bright when the cloth it sits on is in shade.
- Bring back the specular highlight. Duplicate the product layer, move it above the artwork, set it to Screen, and mask it back to just the bright areas. This puts the sheen on top of the print, which is where it belongs and which almost nobody bothers with.
Then reduce the artwork layer's opacity to somewhere between 88% and 96%. A design at 100% opacity on fabric reads as a decal. That few percent of the product showing through is most of the realism.
Name your layers for machines, not just for you
This is the part specific to bulk production, and it is the difference between a template that scales and one that only ever works when you drive it by hand.
Batch mockup tools do not look at your PSD and understand it. They search the layer tree for the replaceable slot by name, against a priority list. Get the name right and the tool finds the slot on the first pass, every time, on any product. Get it wrong and it falls back to guesswork — usually the largest layer with a canvas and bounds, which may well be your background.
Names that sit at the top of essentially every tool's list:

Two more rules while you are in there:
- One obvious artwork slot per template. Multi-frame gallery-wall templates are the exception and need every slot named distinctly (
Design 1,Design 2). - Name the product body layer something unambiguous —

Test it before you trust it
Never build ten templates and then test them. Build one, test it properly, then build the rest.
- Drop in a test grid — a chequerboard with numbered squares. Distortion, wrong perspective and clipped edges all announce themselves immediately on a grid and hide completely behind a nice illustration.
- Test a light design and a dark design. Multiply blend on a dark artwork over a dark shirt gives you a black rectangle, and you want to discover that now.
- Test a design with a hard straight edge near the boundary of the print area. Soft-edged art conceals misaligned perspective.
- Run it through whatever tool will actually use it and confirm the slot is found without manual selection.
- Check the output at 100%, not fit-to-screen.

Is it worth it against buying templates?
Honestly, it depends what you are optimising for.
Buy when you need volume fast, or when the scene requires a product you do not own and a studio you do not have. Build when your shop has a look, when your category is saturated with the same three template packs, or when you are selling a product family — because a set of your own photos, shot in one session under one light, hangs together in a way that assembled stock never does.
Most shops end up doing both: bought templates for coverage, own templates for the hero image.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need Photoshop to make a mockup template?
To build one, effectively yes. Smart objects, displacement maps and blend-mode stacks are Photoshop features, and Affinity Photo's equivalents do not export to a PSD that other tools reliably read. What camera do I need to shoot my own mockups?
A recent phone is genuinely enough. Resolution is not the constraint — even a modest phone sensor comfortably exceeds the 2000 px Etsy wants. Even, diffuse light and a tripod matter far more than the camera, because a shaky handheld frame makes the perspective placement impossible to get right.
What is a displacement map and do I really need one?
A greyscale copy of your product photo that tells Photoshop how far to push each pixel of the artwork, so the design follows folds and texture instead of sitting flat on top. On a smooth surface — a phone case, a framed print behind glass — you can skip it. On fabric it is the single thing separating a real-looking mockup from an obvious paste job.

Can I sell mockup templates I make myself?
