Hoodies are the highest-margin apparel item most Etsy POD shops sell, and the item where mockups most often look obviously fake. The reasons are physical: fleece is thick, the pouch pocket interrupts the print area, the hood casts a real shadow, and drawcords sit on top of everything.
A t-shirt mockup can survive a mediocre template. A hoodie mockup cannot.

Why hoodie mockups fail more than t-shirt mockups
Four differences from jersey, in order of how badly they hurt.
Fabric thickness. Fleece is 280–380 GSM against 150–180 GSM for a standard tee. Folds are deeper and shadows are stronger. Artwork composited without displacement sits visibly on the garment rather than in it.
The pouch pocket. It occupies the lower third of the front and it is not printable. Templates that ignore this give you a print area that couldn't physically exist.
Hood shadow. A real hood throws a shadow across the upper chest — exactly where your design starts. Templates that skip this look lit wrong even to viewers who can't say why.
Drawcords and grommets. These sit above the print. If a template puts your artwork over the cords, the illusion is gone in one glance.
Getting the print area right

Vertical placement. The top of a front print sits about 3 inches below the neckline seam on a hoodie — lower than on a tee, because the hood and cords need clearance. Designs that ride up towards the collar look wrong immediately.
Scale consistency across products. If the same design sells as a tee, a sweatshirt and a hoodie, keep the physical print size identical across all three. Buyers compare your images side by side, and inconsistent scale reads as sloppy. Same rule as in the t-shirt mockup guide.
Displacement maps: the one non-negotiable
On a t-shirt you can sometimes get away without one. On fleece you cannot.
A displacement map is a greyscale layer in the PSD that tells Photoshop how to warp the artwork along the fabric's contours. Light areas push, dark areas pull. The result is artwork that follows folds instead of floating over them.

Second thing to check: is the artwork layer above or below the drawcords and pocket seam? A correctly built template keeps cords, seams and hood shadow on layers above the smart object. Many cheap templates flatten everything, and your design ends up printed over the drawstrings.
Colour: heavier fabric, bigger problem
The dark-garment issue that affects tees is worse on hoodies, because fleece takes a white underbase differently.
- Saturation drops further on dark fleece than on dark jersey — reduce roughly 10% on dark renders, versus about 8% on tees
- Fine detail closes up — thin lines under 2pt and small text under 14pt lose definition on a napped surface
- Heather colours mottle the print — a heather grey hoodie shows fabric texture through light ink noticeably more than heather jersey does
Practical consequence: designs for hoodies want thicker strokes, larger type, and fewer fine gradients than the same design on a tee. If you sell one design across both, adapt it rather than reusing it.
Colour range that covers most niches without bloating your catalogue: black, heather grey, navy, sand. Add one accent colour if the niche calls for it.
Sweatshirt vs hoodie: what actually changes
Sellers usually treat these as one product with a hood toggle. Three differences affect the mockup.
No hood, no shadow. A crewneck sweatshirt has no hood casting shade across the upper chest, so the print area is evenly lit. Templates are more forgiving and a wider vertical placement range looks correct.
No pocket on most crewnecks. The lower front is printable, so the usable area is closer to the t-shirt's 12×16 inches than the hoodie's 12×14. If you use one artwork file across both, size it for the hoodie — a design that fits the smaller area works on both, but not the reverse.
Higher neckline. A crewneck collar sits higher than a hood opening. The top of a front print goes about 2.5 inches below the collar seam, between the t-shirt's 2–3 and the hoodie's 3.
Different buyer. Crewnecks skew slightly older and more minimal in most niches; hoodies skew younger and more casual. If your model mockups look identical for both, one of them is targeting the wrong person.
Worth having separate templates rather than reusing hoodie scenes with the hood edited out — buyers spot the mismatch between collar type and drape.
The listing image sequence that works

- Flat-lay showing the design accurately at full size
- Close-up on print texture against fleece — apparel buyers worry about cracking and thin coverage

- Back or sleeve print, if you offer one

The close-up matters more on hoodies than any other apparel item. Buyers spending £35–£45 want proof of print quality before they commit.

The volume arithmetic

Mistakes that cost sales
Using your supplier's default generator. Free, fast, and instantly recognisable to any experienced buyer as stock POD imagery. Fine as a fifth image; weak as a thumbnail.
Summer lighting on a winter product. Hoodies sell on cosiness. Bright studio white kills that. Warm, soft, slightly directional light outperforms clinical lighting in this category consistently.

Oversaturated dark renders. Showing fully saturated artwork on a black hoodie over-promises against what DTG actually delivers, and it shows up in reviews.
One model demographic. If the design targets a specific audience, a generic studio model doesn't help that buyer picture themselves wearing it.
Testing which thumbnail wins
Change only the primary image. Leave title, tags and price alone. Give it two weeks at comparable traffic, then read the view-to-favourite ratio in Etsy Stats.
