Stickers have the best unit economics in print-on-demand: pennies to produce, letter-rate shipping, and impulse-purchase pricing. They also have the worst default mockups on Etsy, because sellers upload the artwork file itself and call it a listing photo.
An artwork file is not a product photo. The buyer can't tell how big it is, whether it's glossy or matte, whether it's die-cut or a square with a white border, or whether it'll survive a water bottle.
The three questions every sticker mockup must answer
1. How big is it?
By far the most common sticker question and the main cause of returns. A design shown flat at screen size reads as anywhere from 1 to 6 inches. Always include a scale reference: the sticker on a laptop, a water bottle, a notebook, or beside a coin.
2. What's the finish?
Glossy, matte, holographic, clear and transparent all photograph differently, and buyers are choosing between them. Glossy shows a highlight; matte shows none; holographic needs a rainbow refraction overlay to be recognisable at all. A mockup that doesn't show finish forces a guess.
3. Where's the cut line?
Die-cut (follows the artwork outline), kiss-cut (artwork cut, backing intact), sticker sheet, or square/circle with a white border. These are visually different products at the same price point. Show the actual cut.
Print specs that matter
- Resolution: 300 DPI at final size. A 3-inch sticker is 900 × 900 px — small, so any upscaled artwork shows immediately.
- Bleed: most suppliers want 0.125 in (about 38 px at 300 DPI) beyond the cut line.
- Safe area: keep text and critical detail 0.1 in inside the cut line. Cutting machines have tolerance, and off-centre cuts are the top sticker complaint.
- Transparent backgrounds: save as PNG with genuine alpha, not a white rectangle. A white box around a "die-cut" sticker is the single most common production error.
- Minimum detail size: lines thinner than 1 pt at final size disappear. Thin-line designs that look great at screen size fail as 2-inch stickers.

The mockup set that converts
1. Scale shot (thumbnail). Sticker applied to a recognisable object — laptop lid, water bottle, phone case, journal. This is your primary image, not the flat artwork.
2. Flat product shot. The sticker on a plain background, showing the cut line clearly, with a subtle drop shadow to prove it's a physical object rather than a flat graphic.
3. Finish demonstration. Angled shot with light raking across the surface. Glossy gets a bright specular streak; holographic gets colour shift; matte stays even.
4. Peel shot. Sticker partially lifted from its backing. Tiny detail, disproportionate effect — it proves the product is real and shows the backing type.
5. Size graphic. Dimensions labelled in inches and centimetres. Etsy's buyer base is international; give both.
6. Set or pack layout if you sell multiples. Show every sticker in the pack, arranged, at correct relative scale.
Sticker packs and sheets
Packs are where sticker shops make real money — a 10-sticker pack at $12 beats singles at $3 on both margin and shipping efficiency.
Mockup requirements change for packs:
- Show all items. Buyers count. A pack advertised as 12 stickers with 8 visible generates messages.
- Keep relative scale honest. If one sticker is 4 inches and the rest are 2, the layout must show that.
- Include one applied shot. A grid of flat stickers is informative but not aspirational. One photo of two or three applied to a laptop does the selling.
- Sheets: show the full sheet flat, plus one detail crop, plus one applied — buyers need to understand they're getting a sheet and can cut or peel individually.
Building the templates
Sticker mockups are unusually easy to build yourself, which is an advantage most sellers skip.
You need three or four base photographs:
- A laptop lid, shot straight on, plain background
- A water bottle, shot straight on
- A journal or notebook on a desk
- A plain surface for the flat shot

Sticker shops live on volume. Fifty designs is normal, two hundred isn't unusual, because designs are quick and niches are endless.

Sticker-specific mistakes
Uploading the artwork file as the listing photo. No scale, no finish, no cut line, no shadow. It reads as a digital download, not a physical product.
No size in the title or first image. "Cute Mushroom Sticker" tells the buyer nothing. "3 Inch Vinyl Mushroom Sticker" pre-answers the question.
Overstating durability. If it's paper, don't photograph it on a water bottle. Weatherproof vinyl and indoor paper are different products.
Ignoring holographic misrepresentation. Holographic stickers photograph poorly and look flat in mockups. If you sell them, use a real photo — this is one case where a mockup genuinely can't do the job.
