Etsy Shop Analytics: The Four Numbers That Tell You What's Broken

Etsy Stats has a lot of charts and very few answers. How to read views, visits, favourites, conversion rate and search analytics to diagnose exactly which part of your funnel is failing — and what to change.

Most sellers check Etsy Stats to see whether sales went up. That's a scoreboard, not a diagnostic. The useful question is narrower: at which step are buyers leaving, and what specifically causes it?

There are only four steps, and each one fails for a different reason with a different fix.

The funnel, and what each stage means

Impressions → Visits → Favourites/Cart → Orders
  • Impressions — your listing appeared in search or browse. Governed by tags, title, category, attributes, and listing quality score.
  • Visits — someone clicked. Governed almost entirely by your thumbnail, plus price and free-shipping badge.
  • Favourites and add-to-cart — the listing page did its job. Governed by photo set depth, description, price, reviews.
  • Orders — checkout completed. Governed by shipping cost, processing time, and trust signals.

Find the stage with the worst ratio and fix that one. Optimising anything else is wasted effort.

Number 1: Click-through rate (visits ÷ impressions)

Etsy doesn't show this directly. Calculate it from Stats: divide visits by impressions over the same period.

Benchmarks that hold up across POD categories:

CTRReading
Under 0.5%Thumbnail is losing to competitors
0.5–1%Below average, improvable
1–2%Healthy
Over 2%Strong — protect this listing

Low CTR with high impressions is the most common and most fixable problem on Etsy. You're ranking. Buyers are seeing you. They're choosing someone else's image.

The fix is the primary image, not the tags. Open your search term on Etsy, find your listing in the grid, and look at it alongside its neighbours. On a phone. If it's darker, busier, or blends into the row, that's your answer.

Practical thumbnail rules:

  • Fill the frame with the product; a poster in a wide room shot is unreadable at 200px
  • Brighter than the listings around you, without blowing out highlights
  • One clear subject — no collages, no text overlays in the primary slot
  • Consistent style across your shop, so your grid looks intentional

Because CTR fixes require testing, not guessing, being able to render six variants of a thumbnail cheaply matters more than picking the right one first time. Bulk mockup rendering is what makes that testing loop practical.

Number 2: Conversion rate (orders ÷ visits)

Etsy shows this directly in Stats.

Benchmarks:

Conversion rateReading
Under 1%Something on the listing page is failing
1–2%Typical for physical POD
2–4%Good
Over 5%Excellent — usually digital products or a strong niche fit

Digital downloads run higher than physical; personalised items run higher than generic.

Low conversion with healthy CTR means the thumbnail promised something the listing page didn't deliver. Check, in order:

  1. Photo count. Under five photos is a common cause. Buyers want scale, detail, context, and size information.
  2. Price against the visible competition. Not against your costs — against what the buyer sees on the same search page.
  3. Processing and shipping time. Long dispatch windows lose sales silently.
  4. Reviews. Under 10 reviews on a listing is a real friction point for cautious buyers.
  5. Description structure. First two lines matter most; buyers scan, they don't read.

Number 3: Search Analytics position data

Shop Manager → Marketing → Search Analytics. Underused, and the closest thing Etsy gives you to a keyword report — and the only place real Etsy search data exists, which is why it beats every paid tool at this one job (why).

It shows the queries generating impressions for your listings, your average position, and clicks. Three patterns to look for:

  • High impressions, position 1–20, low clicks → you rank and lose the click. Thumbnail problem. Fix the image.
  • High impressions, position 40+ → you're in the pool but buried. Conversion history is holding you back, not keywords.
  • Clicks from a query that isn't in your title → free signal. Promote that phrase into the title's first 40 characters. Method in Etsy keyword research.

Number 4: Traffic source mix

Stats shows where visits come from: Etsy search, Etsy app, direct, social, external.

What the mix tells you:

  • Overwhelmingly Etsy search — normal, but fragile. An algorithm shift or a competitor push moves your revenue with no warning.
  • Meaningful direct and social traffic — you're building something durable. Repeat buyers and off-platform audience insulate you.
  • Heavy Etsy Ads share — check profitability carefully; see the Etsy Ads guide.

Shops relying on Etsy search for 95% of traffic should treat that as a risk to reduce, not a success to celebrate.

How to actually run a test

The reason most sellers can't tell what works: they change five things at once.

A disciplined test:

  1. Pick your highest-traffic listing. Low-traffic listings take months to produce a readable result.
  2. Change exactly one variable. Primary image, or price, or title — never two.
  3. Wait 14 days minimum, and compare against a period with similar overall shop traffic.
  4. Compare the ratio, not the raw number. Traffic fluctuates seasonally; CTR and conversion rate are the signals.
  5. Write the result down. With a date. You will not remember in three months.

Two weeks per test is slow, which is why you run tests on your top listing only — that's where the result is both fastest to read and most valuable to act on.

Worth knowing before you start: the traffic needed to resolve a small improvement is far higher than most shops have. A/B testing Etsy listings works through the sample sizes, and the uncomfortable conclusion is that a 20% lift takes tens of thousands of views per version to prove — which is an argument for testing big changes on your best listing rather than small ones everywhere.

A weekly 15-minute routine

  • Monday: check last week's views, visits and conversion rate against the prior week
  • Calculate CTR on your top five listings; flag anything under 0.5%
  • Open Search Analytics; note any new query producing clicks
  • Check whether any test running has hit its 14-day mark
  • Pick one thing to change this week — one

That's the whole discipline. Shops that do this consistently outperform shops that redesign everything twice a year, because they know which change caused which result.

Diagnostic shortcut:

  • Low impressions → tags, title, attributes, category
  • Impressions but low CTR → primary image (test variants in bulk with PSDmate)
  • Clicks but low conversion → photo count, price, processing time, reviews
  • Conversion fine but revenue flat → not enough listings, or the wrong niche
  • Everything fine but Etsy search is 95% of traffic → diversify before you have to

Frequently asked questions

What is a good conversion rate on Etsy?

Roughly one to three percent is a common range, though it varies a lot by category and price point. The absolute number matters less than the trend and than the comparison between your own listings — one listing converting at four percent while the rest sit at one tells you something specific.

What is a good click-through rate on Etsy?

Compare it against your own listings rather than a benchmark. Click-through is a measure of your thumbnail and title against the competitors shown alongside them, so it is only interpretable relative to the category you appear in.

Why do I get views but no sales?

Views mean the thumbnail works and the listing page does not. Look at the photo set beyond the first image, the price against the visible competition, and whether the listing answers the obvious questions about size, material and delivery. It is a conversion problem, not a traffic problem.

Where do I find Etsy search analytics?

Inside Shop Manager under Stats, in the search section. It shows the queries you appeared for, your position, and impressions per query — which is the closest thing Etsy gives you to a ranking report and the most underused screen in the whole interface.

How often should I check Etsy Stats?

Weekly, for fifteen minutes, against a fixed set of numbers. Checking daily invites you to react to noise, and reacting to noise is how sellers end up rewriting listings that were working.
