Sublimation is the print method most likely to make an Etsy seller either delighted or extremely frustrated in their first month, depending entirely on whether they understood two limits before they started.
It cannot print white. It cannot print on cotton.
Everything else about it — the permanence, the colour, the fact that you cannot feel the design at all with a fingertip — is genuinely excellent, and the rest of this guide is about what that lets you sell.
What is actually happening
Heat and pressure turn solid dye directly into gas, skipping the liquid stage. The gas enters polyester fibres or a polymer coating, which have opened up under the heat, and then the whole thing cools and the dye is locked inside the material.
The consequences follow directly from that:
- No hand. Nothing sits on the surface, so there is no texture, no plastic patch, no cracking.
- It cannot fade off. The colour is inside the fibre. It will outlast the garment.
- It needs polyester. Cotton has nothing for the dye to bond with.
- It cannot add white. The substrate supplies white, or nothing does.

The pattern: light, polyester or polymer-coated, and the colour of the blank is the colour of the white in your design.

The all-over design problem
Because there is no white ink, an all-over design has to reach the edges of the blank — you cannot print a white border, you can only leave one.
For garments that means either:
- A placed print that sits inside the garment with the blank's white around it, or
- Cut-and-sew all-over, where panels are printed flat and stitched afterwards.
The second is what "all-over print" listings actually are, and it changes the file completely: your artwork must be supplied as the printer's panel template, with generous bleed into every seam allowance, and the pattern must survive being interrupted by a seam.
File preparation, in the order it matters
1. RGB, not CMYK. Sublimation printers manage colour with their own ICC profiles. Converting to CMYK in advance discards gamut the process could have reproduced. Supply RGB.
2. 300 DPI at the printed size. The usual rule; sublimation resolves detail well, and unlike a woven cotton print there is no fabric texture forgiving softness. 3. Mirror it — if you are pressing yourself. The transfer is printed reversed and pressed face-down. A print-on-demand supplier handles this for you; a home press does not, and there is no recovering a mug pressed the wrong way round. If you are using a fulfiller, supply unmirrored and let them mirror.
4. Assume white is transparent. Before approving any design, ask what happens if every white pixel disappears. White lettering vanishes. A white outline vanishes. A white background becomes the blank. Designs that survive that question are the designs that suit the method.
5. Bleed on everything wrapped. Mugs, tumblers and cut-and-sew panels all need artwork past the visible area. Sublimation is unforgiving of a hairline gap because there is no ink to cover it — you get a stripe of bare white blank.
Colour, and the thing that alarms everyone once
A printed sublimation transfer looks dull, dark and slightly muddy. It is supposed to. The colour appears when heat converts the dye.
Never judge colour from the paper. Press a sample, look at the sample, adjust from the sample. Every experienced sublimation seller has thrown away a batch of perfectly good transfers on the strength of how they looked on the desk.
Two related realities:
- Reds and oranges shift the most. If a design depends on an exact brand red, test it.
- The blank's colour tints everything. On a cream blank, every light tone in your design goes cream. A design tested on white and sold on natural will not look the same.

Where the niches are
Sublimation's strength is products that cannot be printed any other way — hard goods. That is also where the competition is thinner, because it needs a different blank supplier and different templates from the usual t-shirt catalogue.
What tends to work:
- Personalised drinkware. Names, dates, in-jokes. High perceived value, tiny production cost, and personalisation is a competitive moat that generic designs do not have.
- Occasion hard goods. Coasters, slate signs, keepsake tiles — bought for weddings, new homes, memorials, and bought at higher prices than apparel.
- Poly athletic wear. All-over patterns on performance fabric, where polyester is what buyers want anyway.
- Photo products. Aluminium prints and tiles reproduce photographs far better than any garment method.

Listing images for sublimation products
Two things need showing that other methods do not:
- That there is no texture. A close-up on the printed surface, ideally at a raking angle, showing that the design sits flush with the material. It is the product's main advantage over a vinyl or transfer print and buyers cannot infer it.
- The blank's real colour. If the garment is natural rather than optic white, render it that way. A mockup on pure white sets an expectation the product will not meet.
Beyond that it is the normal print-on-demand image set, and the normal problem: a personalised drinkware listing with six name variants across three blank colours is 18 renders before you have sold anything. What should I do?
- Check every design against "what if white vanished?" before it goes near a blank.
- Supply RGB at 300 DPI, and let the printer's ICC profile do the conversion.
- Press a sample and judge colour from it, never from the transfer paper.
- Match the method to the product — sublimation for hard goods and poly, DTF or DTG for cotton and dark garments.
- Start with drinkware or coasters if you are testing the method. Cheap blanks, fast press cycle, and a personalisation angle that generic apparel cannot match.
Sublimation is not a general-purpose printing method and it is not trying to be. Inside its two limits it produces the most durable, best-feeling print on the market — and outside them it produces a refund.
Frequently asked questions
What is sublimation printing?
Heat turns solid dye straight into gas, which bonds with polyester fibres or a polymer coating and cools inside them. The colour becomes part of the material rather than a layer on top, so there is nothing to feel, crack or peel. It only works on polyester-rich fabric and specially coated hard goods.
Can you sublimate onto cotton?
No, not durably. Sublimation dye has nothing to bond with in cotton fibres, so the image looks acceptable for a wash or two and then fades badly. Blends of 65% polyester or more give usable results, with the cotton content showing as a faded, vintage effect. For 100% cotton you want DTG or DTF instead.
Why does sublimation not print white?
There is no white sublimation ink. Anywhere your design is white, the printer lays down nothing and the blank's own colour shows through. That is why sublimation blanks are white or very pale, and why a design with white text simply loses that text on a coloured substrate.
Should sublimation artwork be RGB or CMYK?
RGB, in almost every case. Sublimation printers use their own ICC profiles and colour management, and converting to CMYK first throws away gamut you would otherwise keep. Supply RGB at 300 DPI and let the printer's profile do the conversion.
Why does my sublimation print look dull on the transfer paper?
Because the dye has not been through the press yet. Printed transfers look washed out and slightly muddy; the colour arrives when heat converts the dye and it enters the substrate. Judging colour from the paper is the classic beginner mistake — always judge from a pressed sample.
