PSDmate vs Smartmockups

Retired in September 2024 after the Canva acquisition — the feature now lives inside Canva. Here is where each tool wins for an Etsy print-on-demand shop, and which one to buy.

Short answer: Smartmockups no longer exists as a standalone product — Canva retired it in September 2024 and moved the mockup feature inside Canva. If you were a Smartmockups user, your options are Canva for library scenes, or a PSD renderer such as PSDmate if you own Photoshop mockup templates and need them rendered in bulk. Smartmockups' old API is likewise gone, which is why teams that depended on it moved to PSD-based renderers.

Where Smartmockups is the better buy

  • Nothing to choose here any more — the product is retired. Its scene library survives inside Canva.
  • If your workflow was purely "pick a scene, drop a flat design in", Canva is the direct continuation.

Pick Smartmockups if: Not applicable — the product is discontinued. Canva is the official successor for library-scene mockups.

Where PSDmate is the better buy

  • Actively maintained, with a PSD Smart Object pipeline the retired product never had.
  • Bulk rendering of a whole artwork folder against every template.
  • Etsy listing copy and one-click publishing after the render.
  • Exports at the template's native resolution for Etsy's 2000px minimum.

Pick PSDmate if: You left Smartmockups looking for a replacement, own PSD mockup templates, and produce Etsy listing images in batches.

How PSDmate works

You upload the PSD mockup templates you already own — bought from Creative Market, Envato or Etsy, or built from your own photography. PSDmate reads the Smart Object layer in each one, composites your artwork through the template’s own transform, and exports at the PSD’s native canvas size. Point it at a folder of artwork and it renders every design against every template in a single job, returns the set as a ZIP, writes the Etsy title, description and 13 tags from the rendered image, and publishes the draft listing to your shop over the Etsy API.

Frequently asked questions

Is Smartmockups shut down?

Yes. Canva acquired Smartmockups and retired the standalone product in September 2024. The mockup capability now sits inside Canva, and the standalone Smartmockups API was withdrawn at the same time.

What is the best Smartmockups alternative for Etsy sellers?

It depends what you used it for. For ready-made scenes, Canva is the direct successor. For rendering PSD mockup templates you own — especially in bulk — a PSD-based renderer such as PSDmate or Dynamic Mockups is the closer replacement.
