Comparison

PSDmate vs Canva

General design suite with a built-in mockup feature, now including the former Smartmockups. Here is where each tool wins for an Etsy print-on-demand shop, and which one to buy.

Short answer: Canva is the cheapest way to get an acceptable mockup when you have none, and most Etsy sellers already pay for it. What it cannot do is use a purchased PSD mockup template: Canva does not read Photoshop Smart Object layers, so a PSD template you bought is unusable inside it. PSDmate exists for exactly that file — it composites your artwork through the template's own Smart Object transform and does it for a whole folder at once.

Where Canva is the better buy

  • You almost certainly already pay for it, so the marginal cost of a mockup is zero.
  • Design, mockup, social graphics and print files live in one tool with no export round-trip.
  • Thousands of mockup scenes on Pro, plus AI background and image tools alongside them.
  • Nothing to learn if you already build your listing graphics in Canva.

Pick Canva if: You need one or two mockups occasionally, do not own PSD templates, and value having everything in the tool you already use.

Where PSDmate is the better buy

  • Reads PSD Smart Objects, so the mockup templates you have bought actually work.
  • Renders a whole folder of artwork against every template unattended instead of one drag at a time.
  • Keeps the template's original lighting, shadow and warp — Canva's flat placement cannot reproduce a fabric or ceramic wrap.
  • Exports at the PSD's native resolution rather than Canva's export ceiling.
  • Writes and publishes the Etsy listing after the render.

Pick PSDmate if: You own PSD mockup templates, or you are producing enough listing images per week that placing them by hand has become the job.

How PSDmate works

You upload the PSD mockup templates you already own — bought from Creative Market, Envato or Etsy, or built from your own photography. PSDmate reads the Smart Object layer in each one, composites your artwork through the template’s own transform, and exports at the PSD’s native canvas size. Point it at a folder of artwork and it renders every design against every template in a single job, returns the set as a ZIP, writes the Etsy title, description and 13 tags from the rendered image, and publishes the draft listing to your shop over the Etsy API.

Frequently asked questions

Can Canva open a PSD mockup template?

Canva can import some PSD files as flattened or partially layered artwork, but it does not support Smart Objects — the replaceable placeholder layer that makes a mockup template reusable. A purchased PSD mockup will not function as a mockup inside Canva.

Is Canva good enough for Etsy mockups?

For a small shop, yes. Canva's own mockup scenes produce listing images that meet Etsy's requirements. The limits show up on volume, on realism for textured products such as apparel and ceramics, and the moment you buy a PSD template you cannot open.

What happened to Smartmockups?

Canva acquired Smartmockups and retired the standalone product in September 2024; the technology now sits inside Canva's own mockup feature. Existing Smartmockups users were moved to Canva.
