Etsy added the listing video slot in 2021. In most POD categories, fewer than 20% of listings use it. That gap is an opportunity: Etsy's own data shows listings with video convert at a meaningfully higher rate, and the algorithm gives a slight ranking boost to listings that use all available media slots. This guide covers everything you need to fill that slot.
Why Etsy video matters for rankings and conversion
Two separate mechanisms make video worth adding to every listing:
- Conversion rate boost. Video holds attention. A buyer who watches 8 seconds of your product being placed in a room context is more committed to the decision than one who scanned a static photo. Etsy reports an average 12% uplift in conversion rate for listings with video, and community data from sellers tracking before/after suggests the effect is larger in visual categories like wall art and home décor.
- Listing quality signal. Etsy's ranking algorithm includes a "listing completeness" signal. Filling the video slot — along with all 10 photo slots — is a low-effort way to improve this signal relative to competing listings that leave it empty.
Etsy video requirements
- Length: 5–15 seconds
- Formats: MP4 or MOV
- Resolution: Minimum 1080 × 1080px (square). Vertical (1080 × 1920) also supported.
- Aspect ratios: 1:1, 4:5, or 9:16
- Max file size: 100 MB
- No audio: Etsy mutes listing videos by default. Audio is irrelevant — focus entirely on visuals.

Square or vertical?
Square (1:1) is the default answer. It renders consistently on both desktop and mobile listing pages, and it matches the square mockups you are already exporting for the photo slots.
Vertical (9:16) is worth it only if you intend to reuse the same file off-Etsy — Instagram Reels, TikTok, Pinterest Idea Pins. The trade-off is desktop framing: a 9:16 video sits in a tall, narrow box on the listing page with dead space either side.
4:5 is a reasonable compromise if most of your traffic is mobile, but it fits fewer external platforms than either of the other two.
What kind of video works best
For POD wall art and poster sellers, three video types consistently perform:
1. Mockup slideshow (easiest, works well)
A smooth 8–12 second slideshow cycling through 4–6 of your mockup images with cross-fade transitions. No filming required, no editing skills needed. This is the most common format for POD sellers and it works — the motion catches the eye in search results where every other listing is static.
2. Room pan / zoom
A slow camera pan across a lifestyle mockup image, or a gradual zoom into the product detail. Can be created from a single high-resolution mockup image in any video tool. Slightly more dynamic than a slideshow.
3. Unboxing / product in hand
If you fulfil some orders yourself or receive samples from your printer, showing the physical product — being unrolled, hung on a wall, handed as a gift — builds significantly more trust than mockups alone. Best for high-ticket items (large prints, framed products).
What to show, second by second
Twelve seconds is roughly four scenes. Most sellers waste them by cycling through near-identical mockups. A sequence that earns the slot:
| Seconds | Shot | Job |
|---|---|---|
| 0–3 | Best lifestyle mockup, full product in context | Stop the scroll and confirm the product |
| 3–6 | Close detail — print texture, paper, garment weave | Answer the quality objection |
| 6–9 | Scale reference — product beside furniture, or a size grid | Answer "how big is it?" |
| 9–12 | Colour or size range | Show there's a version for them |
The two middle shots matter most, because they answer the objections buyers actually message you about. Scale in particular: "smaller than I expected" is the most common negative review in wall art, and three seconds of video prevents most of them.
Which mockups you have available determines whether this sequence is even possible — the detail and scale shots come out of your mockup set, not out of a video tool.
How to make a slideshow video in under 5 minutes
You don't need video editing software. The fastest workflow for POD sellers:
- Render your mockup set (6–8 images at 3000px)
- Use a slideshow tool to generate an MP4 — smooth cross-fades, 2–3 seconds per image, 1080 × 1080px output
- Upload directly to the listing video slot
PSDmate handles step 2 automatically: after your mockups render, click "Generate Video", set fade speed and frame rate, and download a 1080px MP4. The whole process takes under 30 seconds. The output is Etsy-compliant and typically lands at 5–15 MB — well under the 100 MB limit.
Tools for making Etsy listing videos
- PSDmate — generates slideshow MP4 directly from rendered mockup sets. No external tools required.
- Canva — free tier supports short video exports. Upload your mockup images, use the presentation or slideshow template, export as MP4. Takes 5–10 minutes manually.
- CapCut — free mobile/desktop app. Add images, set transition duration, export. Slightly more control over timing than Canva.
- Adobe Express — included with Creative Cloud or free tier. Slideshow creation is straightforward.
How to upload video to an Etsy listing
- Go to Shop Manager → Listings and open the listing you want to update
- Scroll to the Photos and video section
- Click the Add a video button (separate from the photo grid)
- Upload your MP4 or MOV file
- Etsy processes the video — this usually takes 2–5 minutes
- Preview the video in the listing editor before saving
- Save and publish
Note: Etsy displays the video on listing pages but does not show it in search result thumbnails directly. The video plays when a buyer views your listing — which is the conversion point it helps most.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Videos over 15 seconds. Etsy rejects them. Keep it tight — 8–12 seconds is optimal.
- Low resolution. Below 1080px looks soft on retina displays. Always export at 1080px minimum.
- Too many cuts. Rapid transitions feel cheap. 3–4 second holds per image with smooth cross-fades outperform flash-cut edits for home décor categories.
- Forgetting the video slot exists. Set a reminder to add video every time you publish a new listing. It takes under a minute if your slideshow tool is already set up — or none at all if it's part of your listing automation pipeline.
- Four near-identical mockups. A slideshow of the same room from four angles adds motion but no information. Use the second-by-second structure above.
- Text overlays that don't survive the crop. Etsy scales the video down on mobile. Anything under about 40px in a 1080px frame becomes unreadable.
Measuring whether it worked
Video is one of the few listing changes you can attribute cleanly, because it doesn't touch your title, tags or price — so search impressions shouldn't move.
Add video to ten listings, leave ten comparable ones alone, and compare after three to four weeks:
- Visits should be flat across both groups — video doesn't affect search placement directly
- Conversion rate should rise on the video group if it's working
- Favourites are a weaker signal — they lag purchases by weeks and are noisier
Under a few hundred visits per listing per month the numbers are too small to read, so do the comparison across a batch rather than on a single listing. How to read the underlying numbers properly: Etsy shop analytics.
Video slot checklist:
- Duration: 5–15 seconds (aim for 8–12)
- Resolution: 1080 × 1080px minimum
- Format: MP4 (preferred) or MOV
- File size under 100 MB
- No text overlays needed — let the mockups speak
- Smooth fades, not rapid cuts
Frequently asked questions
How long can an Etsy listing video be?
Between 5 and 15 seconds. Etsy rejects anything longer. Eight to twelve seconds is the practical sweet spot — long enough to show three or four scenes, short enough to loop before the buyer scrolls.
Does Etsy listing video have sound?
No. Etsy mutes listing videos and gives buyers no unmute control, so audio is wasted effort. Anything you need to communicate has to work visually.
Do I need a camera to make an Etsy listing video?
No. The most common format for print-on-demand sellers is a slideshow built from mockup images you have already rendered — cross-fades between four to six frames, exported as a 1080px MP4. No filming and no editing skills required.
Does adding video improve Etsy search ranking?
Indirectly. There is no confirmed direct ranking factor for video, but Etsy's algorithm weights conversion rate heavily, and video reliably lifts conversion. Filling every media slot also contributes to the listing-completeness signal.
Should the video be square or vertical?
Square (1:1) for most shops. It displays consistently across desktop and mobile listing pages. Choose vertical (9:16) only if you plan to reuse the same file for Reels, TikTok or Pinterest, and accept slightly worse desktop framing.
