How to Make More Sales on Etsy in 2026: 12 Proven Strategies

Struggling to get consistent Etsy sales? These 12 data-backed strategies cover SEO, mockups, pricing, reviews, and video — everything serious sellers do differently.

Most Etsy shops plateau. Sales come in inconsistently, the algorithm feels like a black box, and every "Etsy tips" post says the same three things. This guide goes deeper — covering the levers that actually move the needle for print-on-demand and digital product sellers in 2025.

1. Fix your Etsy SEO before anything else

Etsy is a search engine. If buyers can't find you, nothing else matters. The algorithm weighs three things heavily: title relevance, tag relevance, and listing quality score (which is a proxy for conversion rate).

  • Put your strongest keyword first in the title. Not your shop name — the exact phrase buyers type.
  • Use all 13 tags, and make each one a phrase, not a single word. "boho wall art print" beats "print".
  • Match your title and tags. Etsy's algorithm rewards consistency between what you say in both fields.
  • Use eRank or Sale Samurai to find high-volume, lower-competition keyword variations in your niche.

One underused tactic: look at your Etsy Stats → "Search terms" report. You'll find phrases buyers are actually using to find your listings. Rewrite titles to match the best-performing ones.

2. Your first photo is your ad

When a buyer searches Etsy, they see a grid of thumbnails. Your cover image is a paid ad you never have to pay for — or a listing that nobody clicks. There is no middle ground.

High-converting first photos share three traits:

  • They show the product in context — not floating on white. A poster in a living room. A print in a nursery. A mug on a morning kitchen counter.
  • They match search intent. Someone searching "minimalist bedroom wall art" wants to see minimalist bedroom wall art — not an abstract studio mockup.
  • They have a clear focal point. No clutter. The product is the hero.

The fastest way to improve your thumbnails is better mockups. We cover the full mockup workflow in our Etsy mockup guide, but the short version: lifestyle mockups outperform white-background photos for most POD categories.

3. Upload at least 7 photos per listing

Etsy allows up to 10 images. Listings with 7–10 photos consistently convert better than listings with 2–3. Here's why: buyers who are close to purchasing want to see the product from every angle, in every context, at every scale.

For a wall art print, your 7 photos should cover:

  1. Lifestyle hero (the scroll-stopper)
  2. Second lifestyle in a different room/setting
  3. Close-up of print detail (texture, colour accuracy)
  4. Size comparison (product next to something recognisable)
  5. Multiple framing/size options collage
  6. Packaging or shipping protection
  7. Text graphic with key selling points ("Ships in 1–2 days", "Premium matte finish")

4. Use the video slot

Etsy added a video slot to listings in 2021. Most sellers still don't use it. That's an opportunity. Listings with video get an average 12% boost in conversion rate according to Etsy's own data.

You don't need professional production. A 5–15 second slideshow of your mockup images with smooth transitions is enough. Tools like PSDmate can generate a slideshow video automatically from your rendered mockups — no editing skills required.

5. Write descriptions that sell

Most Etsy descriptions are lists of bullet points that say nothing ("High quality print! Perfect gift!"). Stand out by leading with the outcome the buyer wants.

Structure that works:

  • Line 1: What it is + who it's for (the buyer pictures themselves).
  • Lines 2–4: Specific details — material, size options, finish, how it ships.
  • Keywords naturally woven in — Etsy indexes description text too.
  • Handling FAQ objections: "Will this look good in a white frame?" Answer before they ask.

6. Nail your pricing

Underpricing is the most common mistake new sellers make. It signals low quality and attracts buyers who will leave demanding reviews. Overpricing without proof (reviews, strong photos) kills conversion.

Find your sweet spot:

  • Search your exact product on Etsy. Sort by "Bestsellers". What do the top 10 charge?
  • Price at or slightly above the median of top sellers — not the bottom.
  • Factor in Etsy fees (6.5% transaction + 3% + £0.25 payment processing + £0.20 listing fee) to ensure you're actually profitable.
  • Test: raise your price 10–20% on underperforming listings. Often conversion doesn't drop — perceived value goes up.

7. Get your first 10 reviews fast

Social proof is the single biggest conversion driver on Etsy. A listing with 50+ reviews converts at roughly 2–3× the rate of an identical listing with zero reviews.

To accelerate early reviews:

  • Send every order with a personalised thank-you message + gentle ask for a review if they're happy.
  • Fulfil faster than your stated turnaround. Buyers who get orders early almost always leave positive reviews.
  • Fix any problem before the buyer contacts you — proactive comms turn potential 1-stars into 5-stars.

8. Run Etsy Ads at the right time

Etsy Ads work best on listings that are already converting. Advertising a listing with no reviews and a weak main photo is burning money.

The right time to turn on ads:

  • Listing has at least 5 reviews (ideally 10+).
  • Main photo passes the "scroll test" — would you click it?
  • Organic conversion rate is above 1% (check Etsy Stats).

Start at £1–£3/day per listing. Let it run for 30 days before judging. Look for ROAS (revenue ÷ ad spend) above 4× to scale.

9. Add variations to unlock more keyword territory

Each variation (size, colour, framing option) gives you more keywords to use without creating separate listings. A "12×16 unframed" buyer and an "18×24 framed" buyer are different searches — handle both from one listing with smart variation names.

10. Build seasonal listings well in advance

Etsy's search algorithm takes time to index and rank new listings. A Christmas listing uploaded on December 1st is too late. The algorithm needs 6–8 weeks to trust a new listing enough to show it in competitive searches.

Build a seasonal calendar: Valentine's Day listings live by January 1st. Christmas listings live by October 1st. Mother's Day by late March.

11. Watch your shop stats weekly

Etsy gives you free analytics. Use them:

  • Views → Favourites rate — If people view but don't favourite, the listing is underwhelming. Improve photos.
  • Visits → Orders rate — If people visit your shop but don't buy, your shop looks untrustworthy. Add more listings, improve your About section, get more reviews.
  • Top listings — Double down on what's already selling. Create variations, bundles, and related designs around winners.

Your top listing is also the only one with enough traffic to test anything on. A/B testing Etsy listings covers how much traffic a readable result actually needs, and why most shop-wide changes are rolled out on evidence that could not have proved anything.

12. Increase your listing volume systematically

More listings = more chances to be found. But quality beats quantity — 50 well-optimised listings outperform 500 thrown-together ones.

The most scalable approach for POD sellers: develop a repeatable workflow. Design → mockup → list → optimise. The bottleneck for most sellers is the mockup step — manually placing artwork into Photoshop templates one by one for 10+ frames eats hours.

Tools like PSDmate automate this: drop your artwork once, generate mockups across all your PSD templates in seconds, and export the ZIPs ready to upload. Sellers using bulk mockup tools consistently list 5–10× more products per hour than those doing it manually. Where the templates come from: Etsy mockup templates. Wider pipeline, including AI copy and publishing: Etsy listing automation.

One constraint on volume: every new design still needs an IP check before it goes live, and that step doesn't automate — see Etsy copyright and trademark for POD.

Frequently asked questions

Why am I not getting any sales on Etsy?

Separate the two possible problems first. No impressions is a relevance problem — titles, tags, attributes. Impressions but no clicks is a thumbnail problem. Clicks but no orders is a listing page problem. Each has a different fix, and treating them as one problem is why generic advice rarely helps.

How many listings do I need to make sales on Etsy?

There is no threshold, but volume matters because each listing is a separate entry into search. A shop of thirty coherent listings has far more surface area than one of five, and the effort per listing falls sharply once mockup production is batched.

How long before a new Etsy shop gets sales?

Weeks to months, and the first sale usually takes longest. New listings need time to accumulate the conversion signals that decide ranking, and a shop with no reviews converts worse than the same shop will after ten.

Do more photos increase Etsy sales?

Consistently, yes. Each additional image answers a question the buyer would otherwise have to guess at — scale, colour accuracy, how it looks in a room. Filling the ten slots is one of the cheapest improvements available.

Does adding a video increase Etsy sales?

Listings with video generally perform better, partly because video occupies more of the buyer attention and partly because relatively few sellers bother. It plays silently and on loop, so it has to work visually in the first second.
