Most poster shops sell the same design in four or five sizes, often with a frame option too. On Etsy that should be one listing with variations, not five listings. Getting the setup wrong either buries your reviews across duplicate listings or sells a large framed print at the price of a small unframed one.
One variation or two?
Etsy allows two variation types per listing.
| What you sell | Setup |
|---|---|
| Prints in several sizes | One variation: Size |
| Prints in several sizes, framed or unframed | Two: Size and Frame |
| Digital download in several ratios | One: Size / Ratio (or separate files in one download) |
Keep the names identical on every listing: "Size" everywhere, with options written the same way ("A4", not "A4 print" on one listing and "A4 (210x297mm)" on another). Buyers compare listings, and consistent options make your shop look like one business rather than a pile of uploads.
Pricing each combination
When you add a variation, Etsy asks whether prices vary for it. For posters the answer is almost always yes for Size.
With two variations there is a choice:
- Prices vary by Size only. Frame colour does not change the price. Simple, and right if every frame colour costs you the same.
- Prices vary by Size and Frame together. Every combination gets its own price, which is right when framed costs more than unframed. It is also more work: 5 sizes × 3 frame options is 15 prices to keep correct.
Work each price back from its own costs: print, frame, packaging, shipping and Etsy's fees. An A2 framed print can cost several times an A4 unframed one, and one flat mark-up across all sizes usually means the large sizes lose money. How to price Etsy listings has the full method.
Linking photos to options
Etsy lets you link photos to the options of one variation, so a buyer who picks "Black frame" sees the black-framed mockup. Use it for the variation where the difference is visible, which is usually the frame. Size is easier to show with one size-guide image in the photo slots. See how to use Etsy's 10 photo slots.
Three setups that quietly lose money
- The default price is the smallest size. Search results show the lowest price, which is fine. But if the shipping profile is also set for the smallest size, every large order ships at a loss. Set shipping for the largest item the listing can send.
- "Prices vary" switched off by accident. Every size then sells at one price. Check the variation table once after publishing.
- Different option names on every listing. Nothing breaks, but it makes bulk edits and shop-wide price changes much harder. Pick one naming scheme and keep it.
Shipping is set per listing, not per option, so size-dependent shipping costs have to come through the shipping profile or be built into the larger sizes' prices. Shipping profiles for print-on-demand covers both approaches.
Which sizes to offer
For a shop selling to both the UK and the US, a common set is two A-sizes and two or three inch sizes, for example A4, A3, 12x16, 18x24. Poster size standards explains which sizes share an aspect ratio and which need their own crop. Selling posters on Etsy from the UK covers the UK side.
What should I do?
- One listing per design, with Size as a variation and Frame as the second if you offer frames.
- Price every size from its own costs, not one flat mark-up.
- Link frame photos to the Frame options.
- Set shipping for the largest size the listing can send.
- Use the same option names on every listing.
PSDmate sets this up once, as a size and frame price grid, and applies it to every listing it publishes, so 100 listings all carry the same sizes, prices and option names.
Frequently asked questions
Can one Etsy listing have different prices for different sizes?
Yes. Add Size as a variation and turn on the option for prices to vary by size. Each size then gets its own price, and optionally its own quantity and SKU.
How many variations can an Etsy listing have?
Two variation types, for example Size and Frame. Prices can vary by one of them or by both combined. Etsy also limits how many options each variation can hold, and the listing editor tells you if you reach it.
Should each poster size be its own listing?
Usually not. One listing per design, with size as a variation, keeps reviews and sales history in one place and stops your own listings competing with each other in search. A separate listing for one size only makes sense when that size sells as a different product, such as a large statement print.
Can I show a different photo for each size?
Yes. Etsy lets you link photos to the options of one variation, so choosing a size or frame colour shows the matching image. It is worth doing for frame colours, where the difference is visible.
