Etsy Shop Setup Checklist 2026: Everything You Need Before Your First Sale

Missing one step in your Etsy setup can cost you sales before you even start. This checklist covers shop policies, profile, payment setup, listings, and the settings most new sellers skip.

Opening an Etsy shop takes under an hour, but setting it up correctly takes longer — and the difference matters. Shops with complete profiles, clear policies, and well-structured listings consistently outperform incomplete shops in Etsy search, because Etsy's algorithm treats shop completeness as a trust signal. This checklist covers every step, including the ones most new sellers skip.

Before you open: what you need ready

Etsy will ask for several things during setup. Have these ready before you start to avoid a half-finished shop sitting in draft:

  • Bank account details for Etsy Payments payouts (routing and account number in the US; IBAN in the EU/UK).
  • Government-issued ID — Etsy requires identity verification for Etsy Payments. Have your passport or driving licence scanned and ready.
  • Shop name — 4–20 characters, no spaces, no special characters. Check availability before you're committed. Your shop name is part of your Etsy URL and very difficult to change later.
  • At least one listing ready to publish — Etsy requires at least one listing to open your shop. Have your first product (photos, description, pricing) prepared.
  • A shop banner and profile photo — 3360×840px for the banner, 500×500px minimum for your profile icon. Use your logo or a professional headshot.

Shop settings: the ones that affect search ranking

Several shop settings directly affect your visibility in Etsy search and your conversion rate from search. Do not skip these:

  • Shop language, country, and currency. Set these accurately — they affect which buyers see your listings in localised search results. If you sell internationally, consider enabling multiple currencies in your shop settings.
  • Shop announcement. This appears on your shop page and is indexed by Etsy's search. Write 2–3 sentences that naturally include your primary product category and a differentiating detail ("Minimalist printable wall art for modern homes. Instant download in A4, A3, and US Letter sizes.").
  • About section. Etsy shops with a complete About section rank higher in Etsy search because the algorithm treats it as a trust signal. Write 150+ words. Include your story, your process, and why you started. Add at least one photo of your workspace or yourself.
  • Shop members and story. Completing the "Members" section (even if it's just you) signals to Etsy's algorithm that this is an active, complete shop. Takes two minutes.

Shop policies: what to write and why it matters

Etsy's search algorithm gives ranking preference to shops with complete, detailed policies. Beyond SEO, policies reduce buyer disputes and support requests — which directly affects your seller rating.

  • Returns and exchanges policy. For digital downloads: state clearly that digital files are non-refundable once downloaded (this is Etsy's standard policy for digital goods). For physical prints: specify your return window (14 or 30 days is standard) and who pays return shipping.
  • Processing and shipping times. For digital: "Instant download — files available immediately after purchase." For physical: state your actual production time, not an optimistic estimate. Consistently shipping on time is a ranking factor.
  • Custom orders policy. Even if you don't offer custom orders, write "Custom orders are not available at this time." Leaving it blank leads to messages from buyers asking.
  • Privacy policy. Required in the EU under GDPR. Etsy provides a template — use it and edit to reflect your actual practices.

Your first listings: what to get right from the start

Your first listings establish your shop's quality baseline. Etsy's algorithm evaluates new listings partly based on how similar listings in your category perform, so starting with well-optimised listings matters more than adding volume quickly.

  • Use all 13 tags. Every unused tag is a missed search opportunity. Multi-word tags (up to 20 characters) outperform single-word tags. How to find tags worth using: Etsy keyword research and Etsy SEO in 2026. Every field limit in one table: Etsy character limits.
  • Fill in all applicable attributes. Colour, material, occasion, style, room — Etsy indexes these separately from titles and tags. Attribute-filtered search is growing.
  • 7+ photos per listing. Listings with 7–10 photos consistently outperform listings with fewer. For wall art, use room scene mockups as your lead photos — see how to create Etsy mockups that convert and Etsy image size requirements for the specs.
  • Add a video. Etsy's video slot takes MP4 files, 5–15 seconds, no audio required. Slideshow videos of your mockup set work well and are easy to generate automatically with a bulk mockup tool.
  • Price competitively but not cheaply. Search your category for comparable items. Pricing 20–30% below market average doesn't increase sales — it signals low quality. Price at market rate and differentiate on quality. Work the numbers properly with the Etsy pricing formula and Etsy fees explained. If you are only trying to work out what publishing costs before you start, how much it costs to list on Etsy answers just that.
  • Clear every design for IP before you list it. Trademarked phrases and unlicensed fonts are the most common cause of shop suspension, and it's a ten-minute check — see Etsy copyright and trademark for POD.

Payment setup: getting paid correctly from day one

Etsy Payments is the required payment processor for most countries. Setup involves:

  • Entering bank account details for payouts.
  • Completing identity verification (Etsy will prompt this — complete it immediately to avoid payout holds).
  • Setting your payout schedule: daily, weekly, biweekly, or monthly. Weekly is the most common choice for new sellers who want to see cash flow without checking daily.
  • Enabling Etsy's "Offsite Ads" — Etsy will ask. If your annual sales are under $10,000, participation is optional (15% commission on offsite sales). Above $10,000, it becomes mandatory. Most new sellers should opt in — the incremental sales outweigh the commission cost.

After launch: the first 30-day checklist

Opening day is not the finish line. The first 30 days determine whether Etsy's algorithm starts showing your listings to buyers or keeps them buried:

  • Respond to every message within 24 hours — Etsy tracks response rate and it affects your shop's "Star Seller" status.
  • Check your "Search terms" stats weekly. This shows what buyers actually searched to find your listings. Use these terms to refine your titles and tags.
  • Add at least 2–3 new listings per week. Etsy's algorithm treats new listings as a freshness signal and gives them a temporary ranking boost.
  • Share listings on Pinterest. Pinterest drives significant organic traffic to Etsy shops, particularly for visual products like wall art. Create a board for your shop and pin each new listing.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to open an Etsy shop?

A payment method, a bank account in a supported country, some form of identity verification, and at least one listing. The setup itself takes under an hour; the parts worth spending time on are policies, shop sections and the settings that feed search.

How much does it cost to open an Etsy shop?

Etsy charges a small fee per listing and, in some countries, a one-off setup fee. The real cost of starting is not the platform fee but the time in producing listings and the sample orders worth placing before you sell something you have never seen.

How many listings should a new Etsy shop have?

More than a handful. Each listing is a separate entry point into search, and a shop with five listings has five chances to be found. Twenty to thirty coherent listings in one niche is a more realistic starting position than a perfect three.

Do I need a registered business to sell on Etsy?

It depends where you live and how much you sell. In the UK, selling regularly with the intention of making a profit is trading and carries tax obligations regardless of whether you have registered a company. Check your own position with an accountant rather than a guide.

Which shop settings affect search ranking?

Shipping price, shop policies, complete attributes and accurate categories all feed into listing quality. Shop sections help buyers navigate rather than helping search directly, but they improve on-site engagement, which does matter.
