Etsy SEO Checklist 2026: Every Item, and Why It Matters

A scannable Etsy SEO checklist for titles, tags, attributes, category, photos, video, description, sections, renewals and shop-level settings, with one line on why each item matters.

An Etsy SEO checklist has two parts. Per listing: a title that leads with the buyer's search phrase, all 13 tags as specific phrases, every relevant attribute, the most specific category, a full photo set, a video and a useful description. Per shop: sections, auto-renew on listings you keep, accurate delivery times, policies and an About section. Relevance decides whether a listing appears for a search; conversion decides how high it ranks.

This is the short, checkable version. For how Etsy's ranking works and the reasoning behind each item, read the full Etsy SEO guide.

Title checklist

  • The first 40 to 60 characters say what the product is. Search results and phones cut titles short, so the opening is the part buyers read.
  • The title opens with a phrase buyers actually search. For prints, that is usually subject plus product type, such as "Vintage Paris Travel Poster".
  • It reads as a phrase, not a list of keywords. Etsy favours natural titles, and a keyword dump looks low quality in the grid.
  • No word is repeated for the sake of it. Repetition adds no new searches; tags do the coverage work.
  • No shop name at the start. Nobody searches for it until they already know you.
  • It is under Etsy's 140-character limit, with no need to fill it. 140 is a ceiling, not a target.
  • No two of your listings share the same opening. Identical openings make your own listings compete for one search.

Tags checklist

  • All 13 tags are used. Each empty slot is a search you cannot appear in.
  • Each tag is 20 characters or fewer. The limit is per tag, so check long phrases fit.
  • Tags are multi-word phrases. "Botanical wall art" can win a search; "art" competes with everything on Etsy.
  • Tags add phrasings the title does not already cover. Restating the title wastes a slot.
  • Tags cover different angles: subject, style, colour, room, occasion, recipient and size.
  • No trademarked names you do not own. These can get a listing removed.

Attributes and category checklist

  • The most specific category is selected. Buyers browse and filter by category, and a vague one hides the listing from those paths.
  • Every relevant attribute is filled in: primary and secondary colour, room, style, subject, occasion and anything else Etsy offers for that category. Attributes power the filters buyers use to narrow results.
  • Attributes match the product honestly. A wrong colour or room attribute brings in buyers who leave, which hurts conversion.
  • Materials and size information are filled in where the category asks for them. They answer buyer questions and can match specific searches.

Photos and video checklist

  • The first photo wins in a search grid on a phone. It is the only image a buyer sees before deciding to click.
  • The photo slots are used. Etsy now allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing; fill at least the first ten, since each empty slot is a question left unanswered.
  • There is a scale shot, such as the print on a wall above a sofa. "Smaller than I expected" is a common reason for hesitation with wall art.
  • Sizes are shown in an image, not only in text. Many buyers swipe photos and never read the description.
  • The product survives a square crop. Etsy crops thumbnails, so keep text and edges clear of the frame.
  • The listing has a video. It sits alongside the photos without using a slot, plays without sound, and must be 5 to 15 seconds long. See the Etsy video listing guide.

Description checklist

  • The first one or two sentences say what the item is in plain words. That is what shows in previews and what scanning buyers read.
  • It answers the questions buyers ask: sizes, paper or material, whether a frame is included, delivery time, and for downloads, what file they receive.
  • It is written for a person, not stuffed with keywords. The description is a weaker search signal than title and tags, but a strong conversion signal.

Shop organisation and upkeep checklist

  • Every listing sits in a shop section. Sections help buyers browse your shop and keep related prints together.
  • Auto-renew is on for every listing you want to keep selling. An expired listing earns nothing, and manual renewal does not boost ranking. See Etsy listing renewals.
  • Listings that never sell after a fair chance are deactivated, not deleted. Deactivating keeps their history if you want them back.
  • Edits are made one at a time, with the date noted. Then you can tell what helped after 14 days.

Shop-level checklist

  • Shipping profiles show accurate dispatch and delivery times. Long or vague delivery loses sales, and sales feed ranking.
  • Delivery prices are competitive for your category. Buyers compare the total cost, not just the item price.
  • Shop policies are complete. Returns, delivery and privacy policies build trust with first-time buyers.
  • The About section and shop announcement are filled in. They help buyers trust a shop they have not bought from before.
  • Messages are answered quickly. Fast replies are part of Etsy's Star Seller criteria and help close hesitant buyers.
  • Reviews are encouraged through good packaging and accurate listings. Reviews are one of the strongest trust signals on a listing page.

Worked example: one listing, checked

A print listing before the checklist:

  • Title: "Dreamy Sunset by MapleStudio, Art Print Poster Wall Decor Gift Art Print"
  • Tags: 6 used, all single words ("sunset", "art", "print", "poster", "beach", "gift")
  • Attributes: none set
  • Photos: 3 mockups, all wide room shots
  • Video: none
  • Section: none

After running the checklist:

  • Title: "Coastal Sunset Wall Art Print, Beach House Decor, Living Room Poster"
  • Tags: 13 phrases, including "coastal sunset print", "beach house decor", "orange sunset art" and "seaside wall art"
  • Attributes: colours, living room, coastal style, housewarming
  • Photos: all slots used, including a scale shot, a close-up and a size chart
  • Video: a short room-scene slideshow
  • Section: "Coastal Prints"

Nothing here guarantees a sale. What changed is that the listing can now appear for specific searches, and the buyer who clicks gets the answers they need to buy.

Which checklist items to fix first

If a listing fails several checks, fix them in this order:

  1. Tags, attributes and category. They decide which searches the listing can appear in, and fixing them does not change what buyers see.
  2. The title opening. It affects both search and the click.
  3. The first photo. It decides whether a buyer who sees the listing opens it.
  4. The rest of the photos, the video and the description. These turn views into sales, which is what moves a listing up over time.

Checking hundreds of listings

In a large shop, the quickest wins are usually the simplest gaps: listings with fewer than 13 tags, no video, no section, or auto-renew switched off. Find those first, fix them in bulk, then move on to titles and photos. The Listings page in PSDmate lists exactly those gaps under "Things to fix" if you would rather not hunt for them by hand.

Frequently asked questions

What is on an Etsy SEO checklist?

For each listing: a title that opens with the phrase buyers search, all 13 tags as specific phrases, every relevant attribute, the most specific category, a full set of photos, a video, and a description that answers buyer questions. For the shop: shop sections, auto-renew on listings you keep, accurate shipping and dispatch times, complete policies and an About section. Relevance gets a listing into results; conversion decides its position.

What matters most for Etsy SEO in 2026?

The title opening, the 13 tags and the attributes decide which searches a listing can appear in. After that, the listing's history of turning views into sales decides how high it sits, which is why photos, price and delivery count as SEO too. A perfectly tagged listing that never converts will slide down.

How many tags should an Etsy listing have?

All 13, each up to 20 characters. Use multi-word phrases a buyer would type, such as 'botanical wall art', rather than single broad words. An empty tag slot is a search you are not competing for, and filling it costs nothing.

Does renewing Etsy listings help SEO?

Not in the way many sellers expect. A renewal keeps the listing's ID, stats and history, so it does not reset its ranking. Keep auto-renew on for listings you want to keep selling so they do not expire, and put the effort into the title, tags and photos instead.

How often should I go through an Etsy SEO checklist?

Run it on every new listing before it goes live, then review existing listings in batches, for example a section at a time each month. Change one element per listing and give it at least 14 days before judging. Constant small edits make it impossible to tell what worked.
