How Long Does It Take to List on Etsy? Data From 5,550 Designs

We measured 174 bulk listing runs covering 5,550 designs and 20,269 mockups. Here is how long each step really takes, by hand and automated, and what that means for how many listings one person can make in a week.

How long does an Etsy listing take? Most guides guess. We have the timestamps.

PSDmate renders mockups and publishes Etsy listings in bulk, so every run leaves a record of when it started and when each design finished. We pulled every completed bulk run from 28 June to 6 October 2026 to see what listing at volume actually looks like.

The dataset:

  • 174 completed bulk runs on 61 different days
  • 5,550 designs (one design becomes one listing)
  • 20,269 mockups rendered, an average of 4.2 per design
  • Runs from 5 to 150 designs, a median of 22

Where the data comes from: most of these runs are from our own poster shop, which we run on PSDmate. The rest are from PSDmate customers. Every number is from finished runs only. The "by hand" figures are estimates, and we label them as such.

Key findings

  1. Automated rendering took a median of 38 seconds per design, with half of all runs between 26 seconds and 1 minute 6 seconds per design.
  2. A typical run of 22 designs finished in 17½ minutes, from start to the last mockup.
  3. Big runs scale well. The 35 runs of 50 or more designs (median 66 designs) took a median of 44 minutes in total.
  4. By hand, the same work is roughly 20–25 minutes per listing. At 100 listings, that's about 39 hours, or a full working week.

Where the time goes in one listing

A print listing has four parts: the mockups, the copy (title, 13 tags, description), the form (price, variations, shipping, sections) and the upload.

StepBy hand (estimate)In our bulk runs
Mockups (4–5 per design)~8–10 min: 2 min each in PhotoshopRendered in the run
Title + 13 tags~5–8 min to research and writeWritten per design in the run
Form, photos, publish~7–10 minPublished through Etsy's API
Per listing~20–25 minMedian 38 sec of rendering

The by-hand column uses the same basis we use across the site: about 2 minutes per mockup and 15 minutes per listing for everything else. Your own times will differ. A seller with a tight Photoshop action is faster on mockups, and one writing tags from scratch is slower.

The 38 seconds is machine time. The person's time is mostly choosing the artwork and checking the output, and that doesn't grow much with the size of the run.

How run time grows with run size

Run sizeRunsMedian time, start to last mockup
All runs17417.5 min (middle half: 6.5–37 min)
50+ designs3544 min (median 66 designs)

Big runs aren't proportionally slower, because designs render in parallel. Going from a typical 22-design run to a 66-design run didn't triple the time; it took about 2½ times as long.

What this means for how many listings you can make

Designs per monthBy hand (~23 min each)Automated (median 38 sec rendering each)
20~8 hours~13 min of rendering
100~39 hours~1 hour of rendering
500~190 hours~5 hours of rendering, across runs

Two practical takeaways:

How many listings you actually need is a separate question. How many Etsy listings you need covers that.

Limitations

  • Mostly one shop. Our own poster shop runs most of these jobs, so the mix is posters and wall art with 4–5 mockups each. Apparel or mugs with more templates per design would take longer per listing.
  • Start-to-finish includes waiting. Run times include queueing and the render server starting up, so pure rendering is a little faster than shown.
  • By hand is an estimate, not a measurement. We didn't time sellers working manually. The 2-minute and 15-minute figures are our working assumptions, stated so you can swap in your own.
  • Rendering isn't the whole job. Picking artwork, setting up templates once, and checking listings before they go live still take human time.

Method

We took every bulk run completed between 28 June and 6 October 2026 with at least five finished designs. "Time" is from when the run was created to when its last design finished rendering. Per-design time is that run time divided by the run's finished designs. Medians and quartiles are used throughout, because a handful of very long runs (waiting on a stopped render server) would skew averages.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to make one Etsy listing?

By hand, about 20 to 25 minutes for a print listing with four or five mockups: roughly 2 minutes per mockup in Photoshop plus about 15 minutes to fill in the listing, write the title and 13 tags, and upload the photos. In our bulk-run data, automated rendering took a median of 38 seconds per design.

How many Etsy listings can I make in a day?

By hand, most sellers manage 15 to 25 good listings in a full day before quality drops. With an automated pipeline the limit moves to how fast you can produce and check artwork: in our data, runs of 50 or more designs took a median of 44 minutes from start to the last mockup.

What takes the longest when listing on Etsy?

Mockups and the listing form. Making four or five mockups per design in Photoshop is around 8 to 10 minutes, and writing a unique title and 13 tags, then filling in and uploading each listing, is around 15 more. Uploading the files themselves is a small part.

Is it worth automating Etsy listings?

It depends on volume. Under about 20 designs a month, copying a master listing by hand is fine. At 100 designs a month the manual route is roughly 39 hours of work, which is where automation clearly pays for itself.
